Udupi, Feb 10: To curb illegal trafficking and the menace of drugs in the district, the Udupi District Police has set up five anti-drugs squads as part of the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA) 2003, informed a press release on Saturday.
The five individual squads have been formed under Udupi Deputy SP Prabhadev Mane, Udupi CPI Maruthi Nayak, Manipal PI Sadashiv Tippannavar, Karkala Circle Inspector Valentine D'Souza and DCIB Inspector Praveen Nayak.
This measure has been taken to check drugs trafficking and peddlers, especially in areas surrounding schools and colleges. The squads under the COTPA inspected areas such as Manipal End Point, Manipal Institute of Technology and TAPMI campuses in Manipal, NITTE campus in Karkala and Kukkikatte, Indira Nagar, K M Marg and Alevoor. Raids were also conducted in bars, pubs and petty joints, according to the release.
SP of Udupi Dr Boralingaiah also asked the Manipal University authorities to take strict action to check the supply of drugs within the university campuses.
