Mangalore, Feb 11: Residents of Kasba Bengre held a protest in front of Deputy Commissioner's office in Mangalore on Monday opposing the advent of harmful companies in their area.
Speaking at the protest organized under the banner of Madrasathuddeeniyya Association, Bengre Jamath, Bilal Moideen, Vice-President of the Jamath said that the Bengre of today is nowhere close to what it was some years ago. Literacy and education has made the people here aware of their rights.
Alleging authorities of manifesting double standards, he said that while the people living in this area are prohibited from building houses here, the authorities have been generously giving land to companies.
“We are not willing to give even an inch of land to these companies,” he said appealing the Deputy Commissioner to ensure that the interest of the people of Bengre is safeguarded.
The protest saw leaders from the political spectrum cutting across party lines participate in the protest and share the dais.
Ivan D'Souza, Congress leader, said that advent of private companies in the Bengre region would result in environment pollution and the people of Bengre will be the ultimate sufferers.
Nithyadhar of CPI(M) in his address said that Bengre is one of the most neglected areas. According to the statistics of Mangalore City Corporation (MCC), nine out of eleven Dengue cases in Mangalore city were detected from Bengre, he said adding that Bengre is a centre of communal harmony and its peace must not be disturbed at any cost. No opportunity must be given for private players to come in and spoil the island's environment and atmosphere.
Shriyan Saliyan of Karnataka Janatha Paksha (KJP) said that elected representatives must not fall prey to capitalists in the name of development.
Sadananda Shetty and DM Aslam of JD(S), Abdul Jaleel from SDPI, Shakunthala Shetty, Former MLA, representatives of Welfare Party of India (WPI), K S Mohammed Masood, Chairman, Muslim Central Committee, Mangalore, N A Hamza, also participated in the protest besides others.
