Mangalore, Feb 12: Members of the city unit of Hindu Jagrana Vedike and Kodikere Residents' Committee jointly staged a protest in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office here on Tuesday, pressing for crackdown on the drug mafia operating in the city and the arrest of the real culprits in the Shivaraj murder case.
Speaking on the occasion, convener of HJV Satyajit Suratkal said the steady supply of drugs in the region was damaging the society and youth were suffering as a result of this.
“The drug and sex mafia are operating ravenously in the district, where harmful substances such as heroin and other drugs are being sold in railway stations and other public spots. People are witnessing students falling prey and losing their lives to drugs,” he said.
Murder case
He said that the police had wrongly apprehended two innocent men in connection to the Shivaraj murder case. He urged the police to arrest the real culprits in the case.
Shivaraj, a technician from Kodikere in Kulai village, was murdered last year in July.
Speaking about the consequences of the growing drug mafia in the district, south province convener Ullas said that the society needed to be made aware of the consequences of drugs and stringent measures should be taken to stop the drug mafia. “In the district of Kodagu, although around 250 home stays have been given permission, over 2000 home stays are running openly. The administration has not maintained a strict surveillance on these home stays and turned a blind eye on the immoral activities that happen there,” he said.
Speaking on the attack on Morning Mist homestay in Padil last year, he said that the organisation had prior information of drugs being consumed at the place, and the attack had been an attempt to stop it. “It was not a raid, but the activists of HJV were portrayed by media as criminals in the attack, and sent to jail. The victims were not tested for drugs or alcohol in their system, whereas all the accused in the raid were arrested, which was done with the help of journalist Naveen Soorinje who was responsible for the entire episode,” he said.
