Mangalore, Feb 12: The red compound walls with beautiful line drawings from Wenlock hospital to University College at Hampankatta in Mangalore painted three years ago, has surely been a feast for eyes. This move did not just help in beautifying the area but also prevented the area from the very generous spitting and urinating habits of people.
The line drawings depicting the rural life and culture of South Canara and also giving out some important health related messages also kept the posters, banners and handbills at bay.
After the success of this move in a bustling area like Hampankatta, the team of artists has decided to repeat the same at several other locations across the city.
The inaugural ceremony of the initiative of Mangalore City Corporation in collaboration with the Karnataka Bank was held on Tuesday, as artists began painting on the compound walls of the Hampankatta branch of Karnataka Bank.
The initiative is an attempt to beautify the city and discourage people from putting up posters on compound walls. Sponsored by the bank, well-known city-based artists Dinesh Holla, Harish Kodialbail and Harish Marne, along with Chetan, Sajit, Rajesh and Arjun, will paint the city's public compound walls in Hampankatta, near PVS building in Kodialbail and along the road from Wenlock Hospital to the railway station.
The artists who were previously called 'Lahari' have now re-christened themselves as STS-Core Decore. They will decorate the walls based on 'Warli, an artform of Maharashtra with exotic images depicting various cultural aspects like bhootha-kola, kambala, agriculture etc.
With this, walking on broken pavements of the city will still be a pleasure and if the MCC decides to repair the pavements it will only be a cherry on the cake.
