Addressing media persons at Press Club in Mangalore on Tuesday, Mr. Masood said that the renovated Masjid building has been constructed after demolishing the twin mosques (Jodu Palli) which existed at the spot. The intention was to unite the two separate Jamaths managing the two masjids and accordingly the old structures were demolished and a single new masjid building has been constructed, Mr. Masood said.
Stating that the twin mosques trace their historic roots back to the time of Tipu Sultan, Mr. Masood said that the mosque served as a prayer house for soldiers of Tipu's army. Although the twin mosque buildings had historic significance, they had to be demolished as the structures had become too weak and there was no scope for repairs, he said.
The new building of the masjid, which has been named Jamia Masjid Kudroli, has been built at a cost of Rs 4.5 crore, based on the Mughal architectural model, possessing striking resemblance to the renowned Delhi Jamia Masjid, Mr. Masood said. The masjid possesses 134 ft minarets to go with an attractive dome and long arcs. Services of Mumbai architect Ahmed Abdulla Kasu, Bangalore architect Abdul Qavi, Structural Architect Premananda Shenoy of Mangalore and M.Far Constructions were taken for the construction of the masjid, he said.
K Rahman Khan, Union Minister for Minority Affairs, will formally inaugurate the new masjid building. N Yogish Bhat, Deputy Speaker, Karnataka Legislative Assembly, U T Khader, MLA, B Janardhana Poojary, senior Congress leader and several other dignitaries are expected to participate in the inaugural programme, Mr. Masood said.
S A Khaleel, Chief Secretary, Jamia Masjid Kudroli Committee, Maqbool Ahmed, Secretary, Asif Sharfuddin, Joint Secretary and Arif Masood, Member, Executive Committee, were present at the press meet.
