Bangalore, Feb 13: As many as 15,612 cases of women missing have been registered in various police stations across Karnataka in the last two years, out of which 12,856 women have been traced, while 2,556 are yet to be traced, said Deputy Chief Minister R?Ashoka.

Replying to an unstarred question by M C Nanaiah (JD-S) at Legislative Council, he said 2,424 of the missing cases pertained to kidnap and 18 of those kidnapped were found murdered. In 2012 alone, there were 5,841 cases and the government had been able to trace only 4,307.

Ashoka said special investigation teams had been set up to trace missing women and publicity through multimedia is being given for the purpose.

Nodal officers, starting from police station level to State level, have been given training to keep an eye on human trafficking in co-ordination with the Anti-human trafficking cell under the Criminal Investigation Department, he said.

Replying to a question by JD(S) member B?Ramakrishna, he admitted that crimes against women had increased in the State in 2012 compared to the year before.

Ashoka, who is also the Home minister, said in 2012, a total of 11,534 cases including 565 cases of rape were reported, while cases registered in 2011 were 11,114, including 586 cases of rape. Provisions under the Goonda Act would be invoked against those accused of rape, he said, adding this would curb such cases.

He said invoking the Goonda Act provisions would ensure that the accused do not get bail for at least one year.

“This will send a strong message to people who indulge in such acts. Already eight people have booked in rape cases under the Goonda Act.

The aggrieved  women are coming forward to register police complaints. The government has decided to increase the compensation to rape victims from Rs 10,000 to Rs two lakh,” he said.

The guidelines framed by the Supreme Court and High Court had been followed while dealing with crimes against women. At every police station, an officer of the rank of SI or ASI had been appointed as welfare officer to deal with issues related to women, Ashoka said.

Ramakrishna said violence against women get highlighted only if they happen in city limits, while in rural areas such cases go unnoticed.

"Recently, a girl in Tavarekere was raped. A friend of her, who rushed to her rescue, was also raped. Victims should be treated equally and given justice at the earliest," he said.

Bengaluru, May 6: Arrested JD-S MLA H.D. Revanna, the son of former PM H.D. Deve Gowda, on Sunday said that there is no evidence against him in the sex video scandal kidnapping case and that it was a "conspiracy" against him.

Talking to the media, while being taken for a medical test before being produced in front of a court here, Revanna stated that a kidnapping case had been lodged against him though he does not have 'one black mark' against him in his entire career of 40 years.

"Without evidence, I have been targeted... All allegations against me are false. My arrest has been made out of ill intention," he claimed.

"The case was lodged on April 28, then, they did not have any evidence. Later, the fake evidence was created on May 2 and I was fixed," he alleged.

Home Minister Dr G. Parameshwara stated on Sunday that a Blue Corner notice has already been issued against Revanna's son and MP Prajwal Revanna, the prime accused in the sex video scandal, as he is believed to be abroad.

"The Interpol will communicate to all nations and he will be located. Once he is located, the SIT will take a call on how he should be secured and brought back to India," he added.

Revanna was arrested on Saturday on charges of kidnapping one of the victims of the sex video scandal.

Parameshwara further maintained that the arrest of Revanna has saddened JD-S leaders and if action was not taken, the SIT would be blamed too.

Meanwhile, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge refused to comment on the alleged sex video scandal involving Prajwal Revanna.

About Revanna's arrest, he said that the SIT would initiate action as per the law. "Those indulging in such acts must be taught a lesson and justice should be given to the families of victims. No one can escape the law. No one should use this case politically," he stated.

According to police, Devaraje Gowda was arrested at Gulihal tollgate by the Hiriyur police in this district on Friday night for leaking the video in a pen drive.

He was arrested on a tip-off received by the Hassan police, which wanted his presence for the case.

Several explicit videos involving Prajwal started making the rounds ahead of the first phase of Lok Sabha elections in Karnataka, which took place on April 26.

The MP, a grandson of former prime minister H D Deve Gowda, is absconding and a 'blue corner' notice has been issued against him by Interpol.

Three FIRs, including charges of rape, molestation, intimidation, blackmailing and threatening, have been registered against Prajwal.

Devaraje Gowda is accused of leaking these videos, which he has categorically rejected.

He contested in the 2023 Assembly elections against JD(S) MLA from Holenarasipura H D Revanna.

H D Revanna, father of Prajwal, is at present in jail on charges of kidnapping a woman, a mother of three.

Ahead of polls, Devaraje Gowda had warned BJP’s central leadership against backing Prajwal Revanna and brought his sex scandal to light.
