Mangalore, Mar 11: The anti-BJP wave in the state clearly had its effect in Mangalore as the Congress emerged as the benefiter-in-chief in the Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) elections.

Following announcement of poll results on Monday, the Congress party topped with 35 seats while the BJP had to be content with 20.

Surprisingly the underdogs like the JD(S), SDPI and CPI(M) managed to make their presence felt, however in a small way. The JD(S) bagged 2 seats, while SDPI, CPI(M), and an independent candidate have won one seat each.

Speaking to media persons on the occasion, Ivan D'Souza, KPCC member, said that the BJP did not implement even 10% of proposals in its last election manifesto. “There was nepotism on display from the BJP.

They made people's life hell through the CDP rules. Whenever the BJP came to power, it only disappointed people.

They ruled at the centre for 5 years and people threw them out. They have been booted out here in MCC polls. In Assembly polls too, people will make them go home. I congratulate the people of Mangalore for showing faith in the Congress party. We will do our best to fulfill their expectations”, Mr. D'Souza said.

Shockers

gulzarbanu
Although there was joy in Congress camp, former Mayor Gulzar Banu had reasons to mourn as she was defeated by Social Democratic Party of India's candidate Ayaaz, who secured 1745 votes.

The 'lucky lady' of MCC's last term had to miss out this time as SDPI won its lone seat by snatching her ward from her by a margin of 645 votes.

Another notable loser this year is Mariamma Thomas, the new face of B S Yeddyurappa's KJP in Dakshina Kannada.

Ms. Thomas had won as an independent candidate last time. But she had to taste defeat at the hands of Congress candidate Zubeida with a margin of 145 votes.

Speaking to media persons after the verdict was out, Ms. Thomas said that Congress had carried out false propaganda against her by playing the Yeddyurappa card.

BJP's Shantha R, who was head of Taxation, Finance and Appeals Standing Committee of the MCC, also had to face defeat this year.

JD(S) graph steps up

JD(S) has increased its tally in MCC to 2 seats. In a closely fought contest, Abdul Azeez of JD(S) retained Kudroli ward after tough competition from Congress candidate Shamshuddin. In fact, the contest was so close that a re-counting had to be done.

Speaking to media persons after being declared winner, Mr. Azeez said that he is delighted to have won his second consecutive term as Councilor. “People have trusted me. They have appreciated my work and have respected the efforts I put in as a Councilor in my last term”, he said.

The other JD(S) candidate to emerge winner was Rameeza Nasir in Ward number 44.

Ashraf resigns

Meanwhile, former Mayor K Ashraf has resigned as the Block President of Congress party. Speaking to media persons Mr. Ashraf said that he was unable to help his ward candidate from the Congress bag victory.

“It only says I am unfit for the job and hence I have submitted my resignation. I will decide on my future as to whether I should continue working for the party or take political retirement. I will decide on it within a week”, he said.

Bengaluru: 'Nati koli saaru' (country chicken curry) considered one of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s favourites along with steaming hot idlis was on the breakfast menu at Deputy CM D K Shivakumar’s residence on Tuesday, according to official sources.

The spread also included 'nati koli' fry, vada and pongal, among other items, they said.

In an apparent show of unity, Siddaramaiah visited Shivakumar’s residence for breakfast, just days after the two leaders shared a meal amid a simmering power tussle in the state Congress.

Siddaramaiah drove to the Deputy CM’s residence in Sadashivanagar, where he was received by Shivakumar and his brother D K Suresh, who is a former Congress MP.

Suresh and Kunigal MLA H D Ranganath, a relative of Shivakumar, joined them for breakfast, which featured a mix of vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes.

Speaking to reporters later, Siddaramaiah said Shivakumar had invited him during his visit to the CM’s residence for breakfast on Saturday.

Asked about the difference between the two meals, the chief minister said, "At his (Shivakumar’s) house it was non-veg, while at my house it was veg. He is a vegetarian, I am a non-vegetarian. I had not prepared non-veg. I told DK to get chicken from the village as you won’t get the original in Bengaluru."

Shivakumar said he had initially invited Siddaramaiah to his residence, but the CM had suggested visiting his place first and reciprocating later. "It was a vegetarian breakfast at the CM’s house on Saturday," he noted.

"Today, I invited him (the CM) to my house. He enjoyed the breakfast, which had his Mysuru taste," Shivakumar added. At this point, Siddaramaiah remarked that Shivakumar’s wife is also from Mysuru.

Saturday’s breakfast at Siddaramaiah’s official residence, held as part of efforts by the Congress high command to ease tensions in the leadership dispute between the two, reportedly included idlis and sambar, according to official sources.

hindutvaboy.jpg

Udupi, Dec 1: A horrific case of alleged rape has unfolded in Udupi, where a worker from a Hindutva organisation, previously arrested and released on bail for harassing a young woman, is now accused of waylaying and sexually assaulting her.

The arrested individual has been identified as Pradeep Poojary (26), a member of the Hindu Jagarana Vedike's Nairkode unit in Perdur.

Poojary had allegedly been relentlessly harassing the young woman, pressuring her to marry him. When she bravely stood up to him and refused his demands, she filed a formal complaint at the Hiriyadka police station. He was subsequently arrested in that initial harassment case but was later granted bail.

According to police reports, driven by the same malicious grudge, Poojary allegedly intercepted the woman again on November 29. While she was walking through a deserted area, the accused is claimed to have threatened her by grabbing her neck. When she again refused to marry him, he allegedly proceeded to rape her.

The survivor immediately informed her family about the traumatic assault. Following this, her parents lodged a complaint at the Udupi women’s police station.

Police arrested Poojary again and produced him before the court. He has since been remanded to judicial custody.

SHRIMP.jpg

Mangaluru, Dec 7: A rare bamboo shrimp has been rediscovered on mainland India more than 70 years after it was last reported, confirming for the first time the presence of Atyopsis spinipes in the country. The find was made by researchers from the Centre for Climate Change Studies at Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology, Chennai, during surveys in Karnataka and Odisha.

The team — shrimp expert Dr S Prakash, PhD scholar K Kunjulakshmi, and Mangaluru-based researcher Maclean Antony Santos — combined field surveys, ecological assessments and DNA analysis to identify the elusive species. Their findings, published in Zootaxa, resolve decades of taxonomic confusion stemming from a 1951 report that misidentified the species as Atyopsis moluccensis without strong evidence.

The shrimp has now been confirmed at two locations: the Mulki–Pavanje estuary near Mangaluru and the Kuakhai River in Bhubaneswar. Historical specimens from the Andaman Islands, previously labelled as A. moluccensis, were also found to be misidentified and actually belong to A. spinipes.

The rediscovery began after an aquarium hobbyist in Odisha spotted a shrimp in 2022, prompting systematic surveys across Udupi, Karwar and Mangaluru. Four female specimens were collected in Mulki and one in Odisha, all genetically matching.

Researchers warn the species may exist in very small, vulnerable populations as freshwater habitats face increasing pressure from pollution, sand mining and infrastructure development. All verified specimens have been deposited with the Zoological Survey of India for future reference.
