Bantwal, April 1: Shakuntala Shetty's candidature for Puttur Assembly constituency on a Congress ticket has almost been confirmed. While the same is being publicised in Puttur, Vittla and other nearby places, Ms. Shetty's recent visit to the residence of her political mentor Ram Bhat has given political analysts more reasons to believe that she is Congress' candidate for Puttur.

Ms. Shetty was once the face of BJP in Puttur. On being denied a ticket by the BJP in the last Assembly elections, she came out of the party under the leadership of Mr. Bhat and started the 'Swabhimani Vedike'.  She contested the Assembly polls as an independent candidate and proved her worth by garnering 25,171 votes. Ms. Shetty was later seen confining herself to activities of the Vedike and other women's and social organisations, thereby maintaining her social participation and contact with people of the region intact.

The JD(S) had also tried to woo Ms. Shetty in the past. Party state president H D Kumaraswamy had come to see her himself and held talks with her. It was then said that she is slated to join Sriramulu's BSR Congress party after she had a meeting with him as well. Ms. Shetty who kept talks of her joining JD(S) and BSR Congress at bay, surprised one and all by joining the Congress party, senior leader Vinay Kumar Sorake playing a key role in making her entry happen.

Ever since she joined Congress, discussions with regard to Congress' candidate for Puttur constituency became more intense. Ms. Shetty's entry into the Congress put Puttur Block Congress President Kavu Hemanath Shetty in a spot of bother as he was being identified as a prominent aspirant for the Puttur ticket. Hemanath Shetty is believed to have had won the support of senior Congress leader B Janardhana Poojary. On the other hand, Mr. Sorake's fans wanted him to contest the election himself. However, Mr. Sorake expressed his support to Ms. Shetty being fielded in Puttur. Giving Ms. Shetty a go in Puttur was also seconded by senior leader Oscar Fernandes and President of Jayakarnataka Sangha Mutthappa Rai.

Although no official announcement has been made so far, the word doing rounds in Puttur is that Ms. Shetty's candidature has been more or less finalised. Amidst these rumours doing rounds, Ms. Shetty's visit to her political mentor Ram Bhat's residence on Sunday has given more credence to the news of Ms. Shetty getting a green signal from Congress High Command for Puttur's election ticket.

But some Congress leaders have rubbished these rumours by stating that the High Command is yet to take a call in this regard. It remains to be seen as to whose name figures in the official announcement list to be made public by the Congress leadership.

Mangaluru, Dec 3: A group of Congress workers gathered at the Mangaluru International Airport on Wednesday to welcome AICC general secretary K C Venugopal, but the reception quickly turned into a display of support for Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar.

Venugopal arrived in the city to participate in the centenary commemoration of the historic dialogue between Mahatma Gandhi and Narayana Guru. The event, organised by the Sivagiri Mutt, Varkala, in association with the Mangalore University Sri Narayana Guru Study Chair, is being held on the university’s Konaje campus.

KPCC general secretary Mithun Rai and several party workers had assembled at the airport to receive Venugopal. However, the moment he stepped out, workers began raising slogans backing Shivakumar.

The university programme will be inaugurated by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.

This show of support comes just a day after Siddaramaiah remarked that Shivakumar would lead the government “when the high command decides.” The chief minister made the comment after a breakfast meeting at Shivakumar’s residence—another public display of camaraderie between the two leaders amid ongoing attempts by the party high command to downplay their leadership rivalry.

Bengaluru: 'Nati koli saaru' (country chicken curry) considered one of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s favourites along with steaming hot idlis was on the breakfast menu at Deputy CM D K Shivakumar’s residence on Tuesday, according to official sources.

The spread also included 'nati koli' fry, vada and pongal, among other items, they said.

In an apparent show of unity, Siddaramaiah visited Shivakumar’s residence for breakfast, just days after the two leaders shared a meal amid a simmering power tussle in the state Congress.

Siddaramaiah drove to the Deputy CM’s residence in Sadashivanagar, where he was received by Shivakumar and his brother D K Suresh, who is a former Congress MP.

Suresh and Kunigal MLA H D Ranganath, a relative of Shivakumar, joined them for breakfast, which featured a mix of vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes.

Speaking to reporters later, Siddaramaiah said Shivakumar had invited him during his visit to the CM’s residence for breakfast on Saturday.

Asked about the difference between the two meals, the chief minister said, "At his (Shivakumar’s) house it was non-veg, while at my house it was veg. He is a vegetarian, I am a non-vegetarian. I had not prepared non-veg. I told DK to get chicken from the village as you won’t get the original in Bengaluru."

Shivakumar said he had initially invited Siddaramaiah to his residence, but the CM had suggested visiting his place first and reciprocating later. "It was a vegetarian breakfast at the CM’s house on Saturday," he noted.

"Today, I invited him (the CM) to my house. He enjoyed the breakfast, which had his Mysuru taste," Shivakumar added. At this point, Siddaramaiah remarked that Shivakumar’s wife is also from Mysuru.

Saturday’s breakfast at Siddaramaiah’s official residence, held as part of efforts by the Congress high command to ease tensions in the leadership dispute between the two, reportedly included idlis and sambar, according to official sources.

Mangaluru, Dec 7: A 34-year-old fruit and vegetable trader in Mangaluru has reportedly lost ₹33.1 lakh after falling victim to an online investment scam run through a fake mobile app.

Police said the scam began in September, when the victim received a link on Facebook. Clicking it connected him to a WhatsApp number, where an unidentified person introduced a high-return investment scheme and instructed him to download an app.

To build trust, the fraudster asked him to invest ₹30,000 on September 24. The trader soon received ₹34,000 as “profit,” convincing him the scheme was genuine. Over the next two months, he transferred money in multiple instalments via Google Pay and IMPS to different scanner codes and bank accounts shared by the scammers. Between September 24 and December 3, he ended up sending a total of ₹33.1 lakh.

When he later requested a refund of his investment and promised returns, the scammers demanded additional payments, claiming he needed to pay a “service tax” first. Even after he paid a small amount, no money was returned, and the scammers continued pressuring him for more.

A case has been registered at the CEN Crime Police Station.
