Mangalore, Jun 10: A woman died after being washed away by gushing water in a drain, at Kattepuni near Morgan Gate in Mangalore on Monday.
The deceased is Vimala (50), wife of Shivappa. She fell into water at about 2.30 pm and her dead body was recovered at Bunder area at about 5 pm.
This is the fourth death occurrence in Mangalore taluk due to rains.
Last Thursday Santhosh Poojary died after falling into a lake on outskirts of Mangalore. On Sunday two kids fell into a water filled pit at a quarry site at Ulaibettu.
Similarly several properties too have been damaged due to incessant rains. While a house was completely damaged on May 8 at Belthangady.
On May 9, four houses were partially damaged at Bajal, Someshwara, Mulky and Katipalla.
Increasing rainfall
This year, 444.9 mm rainfall has been recorded from January to June 10, 2013 as against the 165.4 mm rainfall recorded last year during the same period. Mangalore taluk received highest rainfall this year with 589.8 mm.
Bantwal taluk received the lowest of 331.3 mm. Belthangady received 458.0 mm rainfall, while Puttur received 435.2 mm and Sullia received 410.0 mm.
On June 9, district received 19.9 mm rainfall while it was just 9.8 mm last year on the same day. The average rainfall for the year is 3912.2 mm.
