Addressing media persons at a news conference in Mangalore on Friday, Dr. Ashfaque Mohammed, Laparascopic Surgeon, Unity Hospital, said that the surgery was done on a 72-year-old woman weighing about 90 kgs who was diagnosed to have liver cancer.
Owing to her overweight, the open surgery was a high risk option and hence a key-hole surgery was performed, a successful one at that, besides being the first of its kind in the city. The patient has now been cured of the ailment and has gone back home, he said.
Dr. Jalaluddin Akbar, Oncosurgeon, who had performed the first open liver cancer surgery in 2002, was instrumental in performing this surgery as well.
Speaking on the occasion, he said that he had undergone a dedicated training on laparascopic surgeries in the past and felt satisfied at having performed the surgery successfully. Unlike open surgeries, laparascopic surgeries are performed with the help of cameras and longer apparatus compared to an open surgery, which requires precision and skill. If mastered, the former is always a better option, he said.
Laparascopic surgeries minimize post-operative complications, cause less pain and small scars post operation besides helping the patient have a shorter stay at the hospital, he informed.
Attempts are now being made to bring robotic surgery technology to Mangalore as well. “This form of treatment is expensive. We will wait for another six months as there are chances of the patents of it being scrapped after which it will be available at a lesser price”, he said.
