A total of 17 trucks were reportedly loading sand from Kannur without the permit and during the raid 16 were seized while one went missing. Seized trucks have been taken to Mangalore rural police station.
It is learnt that some of the sand mafia businessmen are misusing online sand permit letters and were transporting sand to Bangalore.
Since permits are issued online on loading of the trucks, several businessmen were seen misusing the technology by using Udupi permit to carry sand to other districts from Dakshina Kannada.
Speaking to Coastaldigest.com, Deputy Director in-charge, Mines and Geology department, Harish Hebbal said, “Mangalore Tahshildar in a spot raid seized sand laden trucks which were found misusing the permit. Few trucks were from other district and some are from Bangalore. Trucks were carrying sand illegally and case will be registered. Now the Tahshildar has instructed us to verify the permit and take,” he said.
