It was a rare Black Panther. When the news spread, the Forest Department rushed to the spot out of curiosity. They soon laid a trap and caught the rare guest.
Disturbed by the barking of the pet outside, Kamala Shedthi and family members ventured out to the store room to see if the things stocked there were safe. They were left in a state of shock after spotting a black animal. Since the family had no clue that it was a precarious predator, they simply locked the room and called the forest officials.
When the forest officials trapped the animal, they realised that it was a Black Panther. Since the family members had locked the animal in the room, the animal could not unleash havoc in the region.
What is surprising is the fact that, despite being one of the most dreaded animals, the Black Panther did not resort to harming a puppy, which was also in the same room. The puppy which remained with the predator for about 8 hours was found safe intact.
The scared Panther had only moved around in the room but did not resort to attacking the little puppy, which was in its company from 3 am to 11.30 am.
Since the Panther had some minor injuries on the face, the forest officials got a veterinary doctor to treat the injuries and then the predator was left into the Kudremukh reserve forest area on Wednesday.
Udupi Range Forest Officer Prakash Poojary said that so far there had been proof that Black Panthers existed in the region. However, it was said that one Black Panther was spotted in Anasi National Park area in Uttar Karnataka.
There are no Black Panthers even in the Zoos in India. But, in an instance, which was nothing less than a miracle, a Panther had given birth to a Black panther at Thavarekoppa Zoo, some years ago.
Though Black Panther trapped by the forest official is a rare one, the officials did not opt to send it to Pilikula or other conservation centres, but instead they released it to its natural habitat following the guidelines.
