Mangalore, Sep 12: Dakshina Kannada district stands first in the state in utilisation of funds under the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) programme, thereby upholding its status of being an educational hub.
Minister for sports and fisheries, Abhay Chandra Jain briefing reporters about SSA in Mangalore north block here on Tuesday said that the district has utilised 100 per cent funds under the programme.
He said that barring some minor compound wall works, all major works proposed to be taken up utilising the funds under SSA have been completed.
There are seven blocks in Dakshina Kannada districts and Mangalore North Block has 317 schools. This year the district has received Rs 26 crore and in 2012, the government had released Rs 52 crores for infrastructure development and other works in the district, he said adding that 90 per cent works planned using last year's funds have been completed.
Mangalore Block received Rs 2.23 crore last year, out of which 2.22 crore has been spent.
'Kalikotsava' in schools
The Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan project officer K. Pithambara said that the Scheme is all set to introduce a curriculum-based programme, Kalikotsava, for government school children where they will be given an opportunity to exhibit their skills through various new and innovative techniques of learning.
"The programme will be rolled out in the state at school, cluster and block levels”, he said adding that the programme will not be a cultural event.
Kalikotsava is aimed at showcasing the academic talents of students and thereby enhancing their learning skills. With this programme, the quality of education will improve, he said adding that special grant of Rs 50,000 is allocated to conduct the programme to every block.
Students can take part in various events to be held at their schools in the first phase. Those who are selected in the school-level will be qualified to take part in the cluster-level competition. The winners will be able to take part in the block-level event. A total of 18 competitions will held in three levels from class 6 to class 8 and 12 competitions from class 1 to 5.
