
Bantwal, Oct 1: Death of Sarapady Gram Panchayat Vice-President Shakunthala during delivery has sparked protest in Bantwal region, bringing together people from various walks of life.
The angry protesters staged stir demanding stern action against the medical staff of the hospital responsible for the death.
Over 40 like-minded organizations from the taluk joined hands to form'Bantwal Taluk Samajika Nyayapara Horata Samiti' and protested against possible medical negligence that claimed life of Shakunthala.
Thousands of people took out a procession from the entrance arch of Polali temple, near Kaikamba shouting out slogans against'Saraswati Nursing Home' in Bantwal, where Shakunthala lost her life. The procession culminated at Taluk office.
Addressing the protesters former MLA Padmanabha Kottari, Rukmaiah Poojary, ZP Member Mamatha Gatti among others demanded action against the doctor, due to whose negligence the tragedy occurred.
Samiti president Lokesh Shanthi presided over the programme.
People joined hands together leaving behind caste, creed, religious and political difference to fight for a cause.
Demands
The protesters demanded maximum compensation to the family of the victim and said that a maternity home must be opened in Bantwal by the Government.
Inspection and assessment of every private hospital functioning in every taluk and formation of a Committee under leadership of the Deputy Commissioner were some of the other demands.
Responding to the demands, Taluk Health Officer Dr Manjunath said that the issue will be taken up during the District-level Arogya Raksha meet.
“Action will be then taken against the guilty. A full-fledged OBG and Gynecology ward will be set up at the Government hospital which is presently under construction in Bantwal,” he said.
