Bantwal, Oct 10: A private bus ran into a stream after hitting an electric pole, when the driver lost control over the vehicle, thereby injuring 20 passengers. Fortunately no fatality has been reported in the mishap that took place near Kudkoli of Siddakatte.
The bus named Mahaganesh was plying from B C Road to Moodabidri, when it ran down the stream as the driver could not get the speed under control. The bus hit an electric pole and fell off the mini bridge and landed in the stream.
The bus mainly had students and cashew factory employees in it. Most of the passengers have suffered injuries on the head, hands and legs.
As soon as the mishap occurred, the local auto drivers with the help of the local residents made arrangements to shift the victims to hospital.
Great escape
The eye witnesses to the mishap say that several lives would have been lost if the stream was full.
"The rains have subsided and hence the flow of water in the stream too has reduced drastically. If the mishap had occurred during the peak monsoons then several lives would have been lost,” said a local resident.
Further, when the bus toppled, the entrance of the bus was facing upward, due to which the passengers were not thrown out of the bus.
Also, when the bus hit the electric pole, the entire pole was uprooted and the electric connection was disconnected, which prevented a major mishap.
