
Mangalore, Nov 6: As part of its silver jubilee, Mangalore based publishing house Shanthi Prakashana gave a warm felicitation to Hawwa binthi Aboobakar in recognition of her three-decade long efforts towards promoting Islamic literature among Kannada readers.
Writer Janaki Brahmavar and activist Ayisha Noor formally felicitated 72-year-old widow of Marhoom K A Muhammad Soofi Banakal in front of hundreds of audience at a formal programme held at Town Hall in Mangalore on Tuesday evening.
Born and brought up in Uppinangady of Dakshina Kannada district, Hawwa was the first Muslim girl to pursue high school education in her town, at a time when Muslim girls were hardly given formal education in coastal Karnataka.
A voracious reader of Islamic literature in Kannada, Malayalam and Urdu languages, Hawwa learnt Quranic Arabic at an early age through self study.
In her four-decade-long marital life with cloth merchant Muhammad Soofi, who passed away in 1998, she gave birth to 12 children, among whom three children died soon after birth. She had played a vital role in imparting Islamic education to her three daughters and six sons including NRI activists Iqbal Soofi and Sharafuddin Soofi.
Writers Shahanaz M, Sajida Momin, Sameena Afshan were present among others during felicitation ceremony. Lubna Zakiyya read out the felicitation citation on behalf of Shanthi Prakashana.
