Mangalore, Nov 12: In a new development, Bihar police have confirmed the arrest of woman at Mangalore International Airport.
Even though Mangalore city police had initially declined to comment on the reported arrest of Aasha alias Ayisha Banu, Bihar police have confirmed her arrest.
Born and brought up in a poor Hindu family of Mercara in Kodagu district of Karnataka, Aasha was residing at Panjimogeru on the outskirts of Mangalore after marrying a Muslim man. After marriage she had changed her name as Ayisha Banu.
Bihar police on Tuesday said that a police team from north Indian state was sent to Karnataka after the arrest of Aasha alias Ayisha.
“A Bihar Police team was Tuesday sent to Karnataka to bring Ayisha Banu, arrested by police there on charges of involving in illegal financial activities,” a police officer in Bihar said.
"After Ayisha Banu was arrested at Mangalore Airport, a police team was sent to Karnataka to bring her to Lakhisarai," he said.
However, police have not yet confirmed whether she is an accused in any Patna serial bomb blasts or any other terror activity.
At least seven people, including a suspected bomber, were killed and nearly 100 injured in the blasts ahead of the Oct 27 rally by the Bharatiya Janata Party's prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi.
It could be recalled here that following a tip-off from the National Investigation Agency (NIA), Bihar Police arrested five Hindu extremists -- four from Lakhisarai and one from Dhanbad in Jharkhand -- on charges of providing financial help to terror suspects in connection with the Patna blasts.
Bihar Police are investigating a possible link between Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) agency and the five arrested Hindu extremists.
