Hyderabad, Apr 7: Five undertrials of Warangal prison facing different charges were shot dead by police on the Warangal-Nalgonda district border in Telangana when they allegedly tried to escape while being brought to a court in Hyderabad on Tuesday.

Among the killed was Vikaruddin of Hyderabad, who was accused of shooting down two policemen some days ago in city and trying to recruit youth for the terror outfit he had allegedly launched on his own.

A convoy of three vehicles carrying the undertrials left the Warangal Prison at 8.30 a.m. The incident occurred on Hyderabad-Warangal Highway at around 10.25 a.m.

Police sources said, as the vehicles were reaching Kandigadda Thanda, Vikaruddin requested police to stop for a while to attend nature’s call. The five prisoners suddenly lunged at the escort policemen and tried to open fire after snatching a firearm from one of the policemen. Other members of the police party returned fire killing Vikaruddin and four others.

However, rights activists in Telangana have called this encounter a cold blooded murder. They have accused police of fabricating a story to justify the murder.

Other prisoners killed were Zakir, Amjad, Hanif and Izhar Khan. Warangal SP A.K. Jha and Range IG B. Malla Reddy rushed to the spot. The Nalgonda SP Vikramjit Duggal along with Hyderabad Range DIG Y.Gangadhar too arrived there. Hyderabad IGP Naveenchand rushed to the place and inquired as to how the encounter took place.

Later in the afternoon, the bodies were shifted to Area Hospital in Jangaon in Warangal District for post-mortem. As the incident took place inside Nalgonda District, a kilometer away from Warangal border, the Nalgonda police and revenue officials arrived at the hospital for inquest. Bhongir RDO Madhusudhan conducted the inquest.

The incident occurred close on the heels of a gunfight in Nalgonda district on Saturday in which two alleged members of banned Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) and a policeman were killed.

Udupi: Udupi became the second city on the Karnataka coast after Mangaluru to launch water rationing, a senior official said on Tuesday.

Commissioner of the Udupi City Municipal Corporation Rayappa said that the rationing system will come into force from Wednesday and will continue till the water in the reservoir reaches comfortable levels.

The dam built across the Swarna river at a place called Baje, which is the only source of water for Udupi city, recorded 3.25 meters of water as against the top level of 6.30 meters.

The decision of water rationing will be reviewed periodically until the reservoir regains its fullest levels, the official said.

The Mangaluru City Corporation resorted to water rationing on Saturday following declining water levels in the reservoir built across the Nethravati river at Thumbe.

Karnataka: BJP leader and advocate G Devaraje Gowda was arrested in connection with a sex abuse video allegedly belonging to Hassan JD(S) MP Prajwal Revanna.

According to police, Devaraje Gowda was arrested at Gulihal tollgate by the Hiriyur police in this district on Friday night for leaking the video in a pen drive.

He was arrested on a tip-off received by the Hassan police, which wanted his presence for the case.

Several explicit videos involving Prajwal started making the rounds ahead of the first phase of Lok Sabha elections in Karnataka, which took place on April 26.

The MP, a grandson of former prime minister H D Deve Gowda, is absconding and a 'blue corner' notice has been issued against him by Interpol.

Three FIRs, including charges of rape, molestation, intimidation, blackmailing and threatening, have been registered against Prajwal.

Devaraje Gowda is accused of leaking these videos, which he has categorically rejected.

He contested in the 2023 Assembly elections against JD(S) MLA from Holenarasipura H D Revanna.

H D Revanna, father of Prajwal, is at present in jail on charges of kidnapping a woman, a mother of three.

Ahead of polls, Devaraje Gowda had warned BJP’s central leadership against backing Prajwal Revanna and brought his sex scandal to light.
