17-year-old Siddiq was admitted to a private hospital in Mangaluru for treatment with severe injuries after the shameful assault on the campus on Friday afternoon by Br Hector BN Pinto, the principal of St Joseph's Pre-University College, Bajpe.

It is learnt that Mr. Siddiq lost his father a few years ago and his mother also suffering from high blood pressure and other diseases.

When the elder sister and relatives of the victim visited the college on Saturday and took the principal to task, he openly confessed to the crime and tendered an apology. “I am sorry. I have realized my mistake. I shouldn’t have assaulted him,” he said.

Later, the principal along with a few teaching and non-teaching staff of the college visited the victim in the hospital and directly apologized. “Don’t treat any other student like this,” replied the boy.

Brutal assault

Eye witnesses told Coastaldigest.com that the principal mercilessly thrashed the student on Thursday and Friday despite knowing that the latter was fasting.

“On Thursday afternoon the principal abused Siddiq and assaulted him for being a couple of minutes late to the class. Siddiq told the principal that he had been to mosque to offer namaz. The principal told him not to go to mosque in the afternoon henceforth.

“On Friday afternoon, when Siddiq was returning to the class after praying juma namaz in the mosque the principal dragged him and started beating him. He also banged the boy’s head against the wall. The boy, who was fasting, started vomiting and collapsed,” said one of the students. The principal also hurled abuses and called the student a ‘terrorist’ and ‘ISI agent’,” he said.

Siddiq’s brother-in-law said that after the attack he was taken to a local clinic in Bajpe for treatment. However, the doctor advised to take him to Mangaluru immediately and get him admitted in a private hospital.

Innocent student

Many students in the college and all neighbours of Mr Siddiq said that he was an innocent boy and known for his good conduct. “He never misbehaved with anyone. After his father’s death he became introvert and he always offered namaz on time in mosque,” said one of his friends.

Harassment

The victim, who was discharged on Saturday night, told Coastaldigest.com that the principal has been harassing, abusing and assaulting him for a year without any valid reason. “So many times he thrashed me without any reason. He also used to ask me to clean the toilet in the college and threaten me to issue bad conduct certificate if he failed to do so.

Some of the friends of the victim in the college said on condition of anonymity that this kind of behavior towards the boy started a few days after he joined first PUC last year.

“The principal always ask some of the students to clean the class room. Once, Siddiq was cleaning the class room. He had kept his identity card inside his bag. The principal shouted at him for not wearing identity card along with uniform and asked him to pay a fine of Rs 100.

“Even though the boy took out his identity card from the bag and showed it to the principal the latter was adamant on his demand for fine. Siddeeq, who is an orphan and hails from a poor family, could not pay the fine immediately. From that day on he started harassing Siddiq,” said one of his friends.

Protest

A day after the brutal assault the Dakshina Kannada district unit of Campus Front of India staged a protest in front of the college demanding the college management to take action against the principal and sack him from the post.

The agitators slammed the principal for spreading communalism in the campus and behaving like a ‘rowdy’. “We have received several complaints that he deliberately targets Muslim students,” said one of the protesters.

Later when a delegation of CFI members met the principal at his house, he reiterated that he had realized his mistake and also said that he had decided to resign from the post of principal. When contacted the college management said that it had received the resignation letter from the principal and a decision would be taken after a meeting on Monday.

A case has also been registered at jurisdictional Bajpe Police Station against the principal based on the complaint lodged by the student.

Bengaluru: In a shocking revelation, a former member of Hassan Zilla Panchayat (ZP) has accused incumbent JD(S) MP Prajwal Revanna of raping her multiple times over three years and videographing the alleged crime.

A case was registered by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) based on the statement by the 44-year-old survivor on Wednesday, May 1.

According to the First Information Report (FIR), the woman claimed that when she was a ZP member she used to visit the MLAs and MPs for various development works.

In one such instance in 2021, she met Prajwal seeking his help to get hostel seats for some female students at a local college. The woman, in her statement, said that since the MP was busy, she was asked to meet him the next day.

“The following day I visited the MP at his office and the MP's quarters in Hassan. The staff present there told me to wait on the first floor as there were many others in the hall. Prajwal spoke to some of the women waiting there, spoke with them and sent them off until I was the only one left,” the woman alleged.

As per the survivor, the MP then called her inside a room and she obliged.

“He held my hand, pulled me inside and locked the door. When I asked him why was he closing the door, he told me nothing would happen and made me sit on the bed. He said my husband should talk less and warned me of the consequences. He also said that because of my husband, his mother, Bhavani Revanna, missed the MLA ticket. He told me that if my husband wants to grow politically, I should listen to him [Prajwal],” the woman alleged.

Next, Prajwal allegedly told the woman to lie down on the bed and undress. When the woman refused and said that she would shout, Prajwal allegedly threatened her that he had a gun and warned of dire consequences for her and her husband.

The woman alleged that Prajwal took out his mobile phone and then raped her.

“He raped me and sexually assaulted me and recorded the act on his mobile phone,” the woman alleged. “He threatened to leak the video if I ever spoke about it and told me to be there whenever he wanted. After that, he used to video call me frequently, ask me to be naked during the call and raped me in multiple instances.”

The woman claimed that she was scared and did not make the incident public and chose to come forward after she learnt of the Special Investigation Team (SIT) set up by the Karnataka government to probe the alleged Hassan sex scandal.

A case was registered under Sections 376(2)(n) (commits rape repeatedly on the same woman), 506 (criminal intimidation), 354A(1)(physical contact and advances involving unwelcome and explicit sexual overtures), 354B (assault or use of criminal force to woman with intent to disrobe) and 354C (voyeurism) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and 66E (violation of privacy) of the Information Technology (IT) Act.

Prajwal is also accused in a sexual harassment case along with his father, Holenarasipur MLA HD Revanna, registered at the Holenarasipur police station in Hassan on April 28.

Mangaluru, May 12: In a shocking development, a group of pilgrims which had travelled from Mangaluru International Airport to Saudi Arabia earlier this month, to perform Umrah has alleged that 26,432 Saudi Riyals, which were kept in a bag, have been stolen.

In a complaint submitted to the Bajpe Police, Soukath Banu, wife of Ahmed Iqbal of Ajyad Tours and Travels, said that her husband, Ahmed Iqbal, along with 35 members, planned and scheduled to perform the Umrah and were travelling from Mangaluru International Airport (MIA) via Mumbai to Jeddah.

Soukath Banu had given Ahmed Iqbal 2,000 Saudi Riyals for performing Umrah and other expenses. The group members were also told to bring Saudi Riyals to meet their expenses.

In her plaint, Soukath stated that the group had left for Jeddah on an IndiGo flight via Mumbai, and their return ticket to India was booked for May 13.

At the airport, she said that 26,432 Saudi Riyals were collected in total, and they decided to keep them in baggage that had a lock. Accordingly, it was kept in the bag of Mohammad Badruddin Kadambar. The airport staff had even questioned what he had kept in the bag.

The group reached Jeddah on May 1. To their surprise, Kadambar found that the baggage lock was broken open, the zip was damaged, and cash was stolen upon reaching Jeddah.

DCP (Law and Order) Sidharth Goyal said that following the complaint, one round of CCTV checks was conducted at the MIA along with the CISF personnel. The loading at the MIA was intact.

Further checks have to be carried out at Mumbai and Jeddah Airport as the victim found out that cash was missing only when they got the bag at the final destination, he added.
