Udupi/Bengaluru, Dec 14: As anticipated, the Congress expelled K. Jayaprakash Hegde, former MP; Dayanand Reddy, MLC; K. Harikrishna Bantwal, general secretary, Dakshina Kannada District Congress Committee; from the party for six years for contesting against the party’s official candidates in the elections to the Legislative Council.

Announcing this here, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and president of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee G. Parameshwara said the party was forced to take stringent disciplinary action as the rebels refused to withdraw their nominations even after repeated requests.
Meanwhile Congress candidate Nagaraj Chabbi, who was contesting from Hubballi-Dharwad, a double-member constituency, announced his retirement from the contest following the party’s directive in Bengaluru on Monday.
The party had fielded Srinivasa Mane and Mr. Chabbi as candidates from the constituency. But, Congress leaders later decided to retain only one candidate following an appeal from local leaders and workers.
This decision was taken as the party expects a stiff electoral battle in the constituency as the BJP has fielded only one candidate from here. Mr. Siddaramaiah expressed confidence that the Congress would win 18 seats in the Council polls being held for 25 seats from local bodies’ constituency on December 27.
