Mangaluru, Apr 20: A passenger from Dubai, who tried to smuggle gold bars into India by stashing them inside his rectum Wednesday was caught by the sleuths of Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) at Mangaluru International Airport.
The accused has been identified as Chattanchal Abdul Razak, 49, resident of Kasargod. Acting on a credible intelligence about smuggling, DRI the sleuths intercepted Razak shortly after he landed at the Airport.
After a thorough interrogation and his examination, the passenger revealed he had stashed four gold bars inside his rectum. These were safely removed after taking advice of medical professional.
The said gold bars weighing 349.80 gms in total were found to be of 24 Karat purity and their current market value was placed at around Rs 10.5 lakh. The DRI sleuths later seized the contraband gold under the provisions of the Customs Act, 1962.
Vinayak Bhat, deputy director, DRI said Abdul Razak on interrogation admitted he is a regular in this business and as revealed from his passport, has been frequently landing at various airports including Mangaluru, Mumbai, Delhi, Ahmedabad, Chennai, Kochi, Kozhikode, Bengaluru, Goa and Lucknow.
Razak reportedly revealed he came up with this ingenious way of smuggling gold as he knew customs check focused mainly on baggage screening and frisking. Further investigation in the case is in progress, the official added.
