Dakshina Kannada: 220 gram panchayats to go for polling in 2 phases

Mangaluru, Dec 7: Dakshina Kannada district administration has geared up to hold elections for 220 out of the 228 gram panchayats in two phases.

The district will have 1,527 polling stations for 10,39,217 voters including 5,12,908 male, 5,26,288 female voters and 21 others as per the electoral roll published on August 31. While the election will be held for 106 GPs in the first phase on December 22, polling for the remaining will be in the second phase on December 27. The district administration has identified 397 sensitive, 199 hyper-sensitive polling stations. Election will not be held for eight GPs that are upgraded recently.

In the first phase, election will be held for 1,681 seats in 106 GPs of the district. Meanwhile, polling will be held for 1,541 seats of 114 GPs in the second phase. The district administration has appointed 220 returning officers and 233 assistant returning officers for the seven taluks.

Since the election is being held in the backdrop of Covid-19 pandemic, the number of booths has been increased to avoid rush on the polling day, said deputy commissioner Dr K V Rajendra.

He told reporters on Monday that all the polling booths will have less than 1,000 voters. “The election commission has directed us to make arrangements to hold elections as per the SOP on Covid-19. Since ballot papers are used for the election, elaborate measures have been taken in this regard. A total of 2,626 ballot boxes will be required for the election. Boxes have been kept ready by taking up repair works and painting. Meanwhile, ballot papers will be printed locally as per the directions of the election commission. Returning officers, assistant returning officers and tahsildars of the respective areas will proofread the proof copies of the ballot papers before the printing work begins,” the DC said.

Vigilance squads have been formed by the excise department to prevent illegal liquor transportation and distribution. Taluk level control rooms have been opened to receive complaints from the public regarding illegal activities, he said.

Nati koli saaru, fry, idli, vada and pongal on Siddaramaiah’s breakfast menu at DKS’ residence

Bengaluru: 'Nati koli saaru' (country chicken curry) considered one of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s favourites along with steaming hot idlis was on the breakfast menu at Deputy CM D K Shivakumar’s residence on Tuesday, according to official sources.

The spread also included 'nati koli' fry, vada and pongal, among other items, they said.

In an apparent show of unity, Siddaramaiah visited Shivakumar’s residence for breakfast, just days after the two leaders shared a meal amid a simmering power tussle in the state Congress.

Siddaramaiah drove to the Deputy CM’s residence in Sadashivanagar, where he was received by Shivakumar and his brother D K Suresh, who is a former Congress MP.

Suresh and Kunigal MLA H D Ranganath, a relative of Shivakumar, joined them for breakfast, which featured a mix of vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes.

Speaking to reporters later, Siddaramaiah said Shivakumar had invited him during his visit to the CM’s residence for breakfast on Saturday.

Asked about the difference between the two meals, the chief minister said, "At his (Shivakumar’s) house it was non-veg, while at my house it was veg. He is a vegetarian, I am a non-vegetarian. I had not prepared non-veg. I told DK to get chicken from the village as you won’t get the original in Bengaluru."

Shivakumar said he had initially invited Siddaramaiah to his residence, but the CM had suggested visiting his place first and reciprocating later. "It was a vegetarian breakfast at the CM’s house on Saturday," he noted.

"Today, I invited him (the CM) to my house. He enjoyed the breakfast, which had his Mysuru taste," Shivakumar added. At this point, Siddaramaiah remarked that Shivakumar’s wife is also from Mysuru.

Saturday’s breakfast at Siddaramaiah’s official residence, held as part of efforts by the Congress high command to ease tensions in the leadership dispute between the two, reportedly included idlis and sambar, according to official sources.
