Don't promise Congress tickets to anyone, high command tells Karnataka unit

New Delhi, Aug 22: The Congress high command has instructed the Karnataka unit not to promise the party ticket to anyone, including the seven rebel MLAs of the JD(S), for the next year’s Assembly elections. The party is planning to field many new faces.

The MLAs met Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi in New Delhi on August 16 and expressed their willingness to join the Congress. They claimed that the Congress high command had promised them party tickets, but a senior leader said no such assurance was given.

During their meeting with Rahul, where Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and KPCC president G Parameshwara were also present, the Gandhi scion said their “interests” would be protected. That does not mean they will get the party ticket, the leader said.

The Congress is wary of giving tickets to defectors from other parties as that could alienate its loyal workers. Many in the Congress are unhappy with the party for giving “too much importance” to newcomers. Promising tickets to the JD(S) defectors would upset the rank and file, the leader said.

As winning the Assembly elections has become a matter of prestige, the Congress will give the ticket purely on the basis of an aspirant’s winnability. It plans to conduct a survey in all constituencies to gauge the popularity of each aspirant.

Recently, some Congress leaders from Karnataka urged the high command against giving a “free hand” to the state unit in finalising the candidates. They want the selection of candidates to be a “broad-based” exercise to ensure adequate representation of different castes and regions. They expressed the apprehension that a few politicians in the state could “hijack” the selection process. They want wider consultation before the tickets are issued.

Their main worry is that many former JD(S) leaders, whom the chief minister welcomed into the Congress, would be favoured. They have been complaining to the high command for long that Siddaramaiah always gives importance to his erstwhile colleagues in the Janata Parivar.

Every now and then, if not constantly, the question as to what is the meaning of joining a political party and what it is to admit a person into the party, and what it is to get a party election ticket becomes important. A political party is generally understood to augment and provide a storehouse of fit persons to get elected and become members of government and legislatures, to undertake responsibility in policy making, #Laws, and #Governance, all with transparency and accountability. To sustain the systems and subsystems in various ways, mutually overlapping and independent ways.

Despite this broad theoretical intention/position, the foremost desire/intention on the part of members is to get into positions of power, to wield hegemonic power and be always in limelight,to perpetuate oneself indefinitely; and dispense favours and to bale out supporters in the event of infractions, crimes and misdemeanours, serious as well as otherwise. But considerations of real lasting public good are only held incidental;anyway, people are doing things to eke out their personal livelihood and general good may come out and of course the system is in place and is traditional and does not require de novo initiation. Despite ethical, moral, public good undertones built into the idea of membership of political parties, it has become largely a profession to garner wealth, and a niche for living, primarily for oneself and if possible for one's family and other legatees. Criteria for ticket distribution, or for its assurance or hope

In an intriguing turn of events, authorities have levied a fine against an actress for breaching traffic regulations depicted within a television serial.

In the 14th episode of the popular serial ‘Seetha Raama’ a Kannada language drama series airing on Zee Kannada, a scene featuring two individuals riding a scooter caught the attention of viewers. While the rider adhered to safety protocols by wearing a helmet, the actress on the pillion did not.

Jayaprakash Yekkur, a vigilant resident of Mangaluru, took swift notice of this discrepancy and promptly lodged a complaint with the Mangaluru City Police Commissioner. Yekkur underscored the concern that such portrayals of traffic violations by actors and actresses could potentially convey misleading messages to viewers, particularly those who are impressionable. He urged authorities to take decisive legal action against the actress, the serial’s director, and the broadcasting channel.

In response to Yekkur’s complaint, the Commissioner of Police forwarded the matter to the Mangaluru Traffic Police station. Subsequently, notices were issued to the owner of the two-wheeler featured in the scene and the serial’s director. Upon investigation, it was revealed that the scene had been filmed in Nandini Layout, Bengaluru, and was referred to the Rajajinagar police station for further scrutiny.

On May 10, after thorough inquiries, the Rajajinagar police station imposed a fine of Rs 500 on both the actress and the owner of the two-wheeler. Furthermore, the production manager of the serial committed to adhering strictly to traffic regulations in future episodes.

Expressing his contentment with the resolution, Jayaprakash Yekkur commented that the prompt response from the police, coupled with the imposition of a fine, serves as a valuable lesson and contributes significantly to enhancing public awareness.

Mangaluru: Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat High School in Harekala, popularly known as Padma Shri awardee Harekala Hajabba’s school, is gearing up to inaugurate its first batch of Pre-University (PU) courses starting June 1.

The government issued an order to elevate the school established by Padma Shri awardee Harekala Hajabba to the status of a PU College a few months ago.

The School Education and Literacy Department (PU Education) has formally sanctioned the upgrade for the school.

CD Jayanna, the deputy director of PU Education, confirmed that all necessary approvals have been obtained from the government to initiate PU classes.

“Hajabba’s school will kick off PU classes for its inaugural batch on June 1. We have appointed a senior lecturer as the interim principal for the PU college. Presently, the school possesses the essential temporary infrastructure to begin the I PU batch. Plans are underway to enhance the infrastructure for the PU college in the future. Currently, the school boasts adequate classrooms and facilities to commence PU classes,” stated Jayanna.

Harekala Hajabba, an orange vendor, personally erected the school in his native village, New Padpu in Harekala, situated approximately 35 km from Mangaluru. For several years, he has tirelessly petitioned the government for the establishment of a PU college.

Expressing his gratitude, Hajabba mentioned that 19 students who recently completed their SSLC examinations are poised to enroll in the new PU college. The International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol) on Monday responded to Karnataka’s Special Investigation Team (SIT) regarding a blue corner notice issued against JDS MP Prajwal Revanna.

In its response, Interpol said that all 196 member countries were alerted to identify and report if Prajwal Revanna is spotted at any port in their jurisdiction.

The Karnataka government issued a Blue Corner Notice on Sunday against Prajwal Revanna, who is facing allegations of sexual abuse by his staff members.

A Blue Corner Notice is issued by the international police cooperation body to collect additional information from its member countries about a person’s identity, location or activities about a crime.

The notice was issued after the 33-year-old Hassan MP reportedly flew to Germany soon after the Karnataka State Commission for Women chairperson Nagalakshmi Chowdhary wrote to the CM to order a probe into the sexual allegations against Prajwal.

Last week, the anticipatory bail application of Prajwal Revanna was also denied by Justice Santosh Gajanana Bhat’s bench of People’s Representative Court in Bengaluru.

Earlier, his MLA father and son of former Prime Minster HD Deve Gowda, HD Revanna was remanded to Karnataka SIT custody in a kidnapping-related sex scandal case.

His arrest came after the kidnapped victim was rescued from Revanna’s close assistant Rajasekhar’s farmhouse in Kalenahalli, Hunsur Taluk after the SIT conducted the rescue operation to find her, the police said.

The abduction case was filed by the son of a woman who worked at the Revannas’ house for nearly five years. He alleged that his mother was kidnapped from her home on April 29 by Satish Babanna a relative of Revanna.

The Karnataka Sex Scandal case pertains to explicit video clips allegedly involving the 33-year-old Prajwal, grandson of JD(S) patriarch and former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda, which went viral on social media.

Those videos began to make rounds in Hassan in recent days, following which the state government constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the sexual abuse allegations against the MP.
