Govt vows to provide permanent solution for sea erosion in coastal Karnataka

Mangaluru, Sept 17: In order to check damages to people living along the coastal areas, the state government would come out with a permanent solution to prevent sea erosion, Infrastructure Development Department, Ports and Inland Fisheries Principal Secretary and Maritime Board Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Kapil Mohan told the media here.

The Principal Secretary, who took stock of the ongoing works to prevent sea erosion on Wednesday, said using technology, a permanent solution against sea erosion would be implemented.

He further said that such a work has been taken up at Mukkacharry in Ullal, which did not witness any sea erosion.

He also inspected the ADB-funded 635 metres and 10 metres long wall being constructed at a total cost of Rs 18.02 crore at Mukkacherry in Ullal.

Meanwhile, Mr Mohan instructed the officials to ensure that high quality was maintained in the ongoing works. With such walls being planned in most places, the problem of sea erosion along the coast could be reduced, he stated.

Mr Mohan visited Tannirubhavi, Bharati Shipyard, Bengre Jetty, Someshwara, Uchhila, Battapady and Mukkacherry the costal belts.

Saudi-Kerala AIE flight diverted to Mangaluru for medical emergency

Mangaluru, Dec 2: Mangaluru International Airport responded to a medical emergency late on Monday night. Air India Express flight IX 522, travelling from Riyadh to Thiruvananthapuram, was diverted to Mangaluru Airport after a passenger in his late 30s experienced a medical emergency on board.

The Airport’s Operations Control Centre received an alert regarding the passenger’s health condition. The airport activated its emergency response protocol, mobilising the airport medical team and coordinating with stakeholders including CISF, immigration, and customs.

Upon landing, airport medical personnel attended to the passenger, assessed his condition, and arranged to shift him to a local tertiary-care hospital for further treatment. The passenger’s relatives accompanied the passenger, who incidentally received necessary medical care on board, which helped stabilise the situation.

Following the handling of the emergency, the flight departed for Thiruvananthapuram at 2:05 am on Tuesday.

"We appreciate the cooperation of all parties involved, and this incident reaffirms our ongoing commitment to prioritising passenger safety and readiness to respond to unforeseen emergencies with professionalism and care," the Airport spokesperson said.
