Mangalore, Feb 11: Out of the 18 law colleges that participated, SVKM's Pravin Gandhi College of Law, Mumbai, emerged as overall winners of the three-day national-level law fest 'Victoria Iuris 13' organised by SDM Law College and Centre for Post Graduate Studies and Research in Law, Mangalore, while VM Salgaocar College of Law, Goa, emerged as the overall runner-up.
Delivering the valedictory address, Karnataka High Court Judge Justice Sathyanarayana said that in the past, the study of law was not given much importance in law colleges. “Things have changed now. Studying law is as attractive and competitive as any other course. It has been a long journey from the time law students were ignored. The conventional type has given way to newer concepts of learning which has changed the way even students look at law courses. The creation of tribunals and special courts in the Armed Forces has decentralised the concentration of legal cases in courts and given way to more opportunities for law students,” he said.
Speaking about the standard of advocacy, he said that improvisation in the study of law was also necessary along with improvement in the quality of teaching in law colleges.
He encouraged them to witness court proceedings to gain first-hand experience and advised students to learn 'courts-manship' and tact, along with the seven lamps of advocacy i.e. honesty, courage, industry, wit, eloquence, judgement and fellowship. “Students must concentrate on being more responsible in the society. Be prepared to struggle and render service to the society,” he stressed.
Advocate from Karkala M K Vijaya Kumar advised the students to retain quality and ethics in the legal profession. “Persuasion, perseverance and performance are essential in the practice of law. Acquire as much dynamism as possible,” he said.
SVKM's Pravin Gandhi College of Law bagged the first place in the Moot Court competition, while ILS Law College, Pune, came second.
Karnataka High Court Judge Justice Abdul Nazeer, Additional Advocate General of Karnataka K M Nataraj, vice-president of SDM Education Society Prof S Prabhakar and proprietor of Hotel Maya International Vasudev Kamath were present among others on the occasion.
