Kasargod, Aug 31: The police on Friday foiled a meticulously planned kidnapping drama involving a 22-year-old homemaker and her paramour. The eloped couple were taken into custody from a train in Kozhikode, ending hours of suspense.
Around 10.30 a.m. on Friday, a resident of the hilly hamlet of Chittarikkal received a phone call from his wife, telling him that she was being kidnapped by a group of scrap dealers.
The man, a motorbike mechanic, alerted the police at the Chitittarikkal station when his wife’s cellphone was switched off minutes after the call.
He then received a photo of his wife bleeding profusely from neck through a WhatsApp message. The couple got married about five years ago and has a son.
Senior police officers led by Superintendent of Police A. Srinivas and Kanhangad Dy.SP P.K. Sudhakaran reached the locality, travelling nearly 75 km from the district headquarters. The police officers found bloodstains in the couple’s house.
Fake bloodstains
Dr. Srinivas, an MBBS degree holder himself, suspected foul play since the blood on the woman’s neck looked artificial. The confusion ended after the bloodstains from the house turned out to be fake after an informal laboratory test. The woman’s lover had used artificial colours to mislead the police.
The police, with the help of the cyber cell, found that the woman was present in Kannur around 2 p.m. Mr. Sudhakaran said the police suspected that the couple had boarded the Mangaluru-Coimbatore Intercity Express probably from Payyannur.
The car allegedly used for the ‘kidnap’ was found abandoned at the Payyannur railway station.
The police alerted major railway stations and took the woman and her lover into custody as the train reached Kozhikode around 3.30 p.m. with the help of the Railway Police.
