Bengaluru, Jan 14: The Lingayat camp fighting for a separate religion has decided to formally break away from the Akhila Bharatha Veerashaiva Mahasabha and create a new Vishwa Lingayat Parishat to carry forward its campaign.

"The decision to create the Vishwa Lingayat Parishat is the result of our unfruitful attempts to make peace with the Akhila Bharatha Veerashaiva Mahasabha," retired IAS officer S M Jaamdar, who is spearheading the Lingayat religion campaign, told reporters here on Saturday. The new forum will be launched in Bengaluru on January 23.

The formation of the Vishwa Lingayat Parishat seeks to challenge the powerful clout of the 114-year-old Akhila Bharatha Veerashaiva Mahasabha, which argues that Veerashaivas and Lingayats are the same. Mahasabha leaders have rejected the Lingayat camp's stake for a separate religion.

"For the past eight months, we tried to work with the Veerashaiva Mahasabha and iron out differences, but it looks like they will not be resolved. Their tone remains the same. We are left with no choice," Jaamdar said.

The Veerashaiva and Lingayat camps, comprising religious leaders as well as members of the ruling Congress, have been at loggerheads over the separate religion issue. Veerashaivas say their religion predates 12th century reformer Basavanna, credited as the founder of the Lingayat faith. Veerashaivas revere a pantheon of holy men (Panchacharyas). The Lingayat camp argues that Veerashaiva and Lingayats are radically different and that the religion must be called Lingayat. This group says it goes by the ideals of Basavanna.

"We want to know if the Panchacharyas accept Basavanna as the founder of the Lingayat religion, that Vachana Sahitya is our only holy scripture and that we do not belong to the Hindu religion. The Veerashaiva Mahasabha has softened its stand on these points, but there are other points where our differences still exist," Jaamdar said.

The Vishwa Lingayat Parishat will be different in that it will have a youth wing (Basava Sene), a professionals cell, a women cell and a platform for Lingayats living overseas. The Parishat will launch a membership drive soon.

Jaamdar refused to comment on an expert committee constituted by the state government seeking six more months to submit its report on demands for the separate religion status for Veerashaiva-Lingayat faith. "We've not fixed any deadline. Let them take time. We're hopeful because we have evidence to prove our case."

Bengaluru, May 2: Prajwal Revanna, grandson of former Prime Minister Deve Gowda, was issued fresh summons on Thursday by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) which is investigating the case of obscene videos involving the former JD(S) member, several news outlets reported.

The SIT also junked his appeal which sought seven days time to join the probe, as per these reports.

Prajwal and his father, H D Revanna, have sexual harassment and stalking cases filed against them over the matter. Gowda's son, H D Revanna, however, said that what took place '4-5 years ago' is now being turned into a legal case.

JD(S) in its core committee meeting suspended Prajwal from the party till the end of the probe. Prajwal, meanwhile, took to X to state he would join the probe in seven days time, asserting 'truth will prevail'.

Mangaluru International Airport (MIA) has taken a step towards enhancing aircraft safety and has planned to install a Precision Approach Lighting (PAL) category 1 system near Sri Kordabbu Daivasthana, Unile.

The groundbreaking ceremony was held on Friday. The project involves various works related to the PAL system and aims to be completed in 20 months.

The airport has undertaken this project in accordance with safety recommendations from the ministry of civil aviation and the civil aviation safety and security regulator. The PAL CAT 1 system will provide pilots with improved visibility of runway 24 and guidance during their final landing approach. The system will be installed 900m from the threshold of runway 24, as this end of the runway accounts for 90% of aircraft landings at the airport.

The PAL will be mounted on approximately 18 lattice structures, which is a unique feature of the project. The lights will be fixed to frangible T-shaped structures. The project will complement the installation of runway centerline lights, which has already been completed and is awaiting approval from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation for commissioning.

Hassan MP and Lok Sabha election candidate of the BJP-JD(S) alliance Prajwal Revanna, who is facing an inquiry over the alleged sexual abuse of several women, said the truth will prevail.

The MP, who left the country as soon as the election to his constituency ended, has also sought seven days' time to appear before the Special Investigation Team (SIT) formed by the Karnataka government to inquire into the huge cache of about 3,000 explicit videos and photos allegedly pertaining to him, which have gone viral on social media.

“As I am not in Bangalore to attend the enquiry, I have communicated to CID Bangalore through my advocate. Truth will prevail soon,” Prajwal, grandson of former prime minister and JD(S) patriarch H D Deve Gowda, said in a post on X.

A case has been registered against MLA and former minister H D Revanna and his son Prajwal at Holenarasipura on a complaint lodged by their former cook and relative for allegedly sexually harassing her.

She also alleged that Prajwal made video calls to her daughter and spoke in an objectionable manner, which forced her to block him.

The MP who is seeking re-election from Hassan on a JD(S) ticket, shared a letter by his lawyer Arun G to the Deputy Superintendent of Police of the SIT, in which he has sought seven days' time to appear before the official because he is abroad.
