Udupi, Jul 19: The doctors of Mainipal’s KMC hospital, where Shiroor Mutt chief pontiff Lakshmivara Teertha Swami breathed his last today, have not ruled out the possibilities of poisoning.
P Latavya Acharya, Dewan of Shiroor Mutt, had earlier said that the seer had food with college students who were planting saplings in 15 acres of mutt premises at Shiroor village, about 24 km from Udupi, on Monday.
Later he suffered from food poisoning, which affected his blood pressure and he was rushed to the Kasturba Hospital at around 1 a.m. on Wednesday, where he was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit. His condition worsened and on Thursday morning he breathed his last.
Dr Avinash Shetty, medical superintendent of KMC, told media persons that the seer might have consumed food laced with poison.
In a press release, the hospital said that there is suspicion of poisoning. "Swamiji was brought to the hospital at 1 am on Wednesday from a private hospital in Udupi. On arrival he was found to be critically ill with breathlessness, severe hypotension and massive gastrointestinal bleeding. He had history of diarrhoea prior to this episode. All routine investigations were done,” the release said.
"A team of doctors from Kasturba hospital provided medical care in the form of ventilator support, blood transfusion and dialysis. There is suspicion of poisoning and toxicological samples have been sent. However, his condition continued to deteriorate rapidly in spite of best efforts from the medical team. He was declared dead at 8 am on Thursday," the release read.
Brother alleges ‘murder’
Meanwhile, Lathavya Acharya, brother of the late seer, has lodged a complaint at Hiriadka police station alleging that the latter was murdered.
“This isn’t a natural death. He has been poisoned which led to his death,” said Acharaya in his complaint and demanded a high- level probe into the case. A case has been registered and investigations are on.
