Ahmedabad, November 15: India won what could prove to be an important toss and chose to bat in the opening Test of the series in Ahmedabad. On a new pitch that is expected to turn sharply as the match wears on, first innings runs are likely to prove key.
India, as expected, went into the match with two specialist seamers - Zaheer Khan and Umesh Yadav - and two specialist spinners - R Ashwin and Pragyan Ojha - with Yuvraj Singh also able to provide left-arm spin as required.
Nick Compton made his Test debut for England. The tourists opted for a three-man seam attack, with Tim Bresnan winning selection ahead of left-arm spinner Monty Panesar. Graeme Swann was their only specialist spinner, with Samit Patel able to provide left-arm spin as back-up.
