Pujara

Ahmedabad, November 20: Cheteshwar Pujara, who brought all his technique and temperament into play in the first Test, duly ended up with the Man of the Match award for his unbeaten scores of 206 and 41.

A beaming Pujara said: "The ball was coming nicely on to the bat. There was turn, but it was slow. As a team we knew we had to put up 500-plus and I had to hang around to play my role. In the second innings the ball was hard and I had a lot of confidence. I was out for almost a year and since I'm back I'm enjoying it."

Skipper MS Dhoni too was all praise. "It was a fantastic game for Pujara. He has the temperament to play big innings and has shown that on the domestic circuit. He makes sure he converts fifties to hundreds. He just needs to keep doing the things he's doing."

Dhoni also pointed out how Pujara's calm approach stood out. "He's very calm and cool. He knows his role. He accepts responsibility, which is very important. After scoring 200-odd runs he was not shy to stand at short-leg . He's among our best close-in fielders, either at silly point or short square leg. It would have been easy for him to say he was not feeling 100 % to stand at short leg, but he was there."

Chipping in with high praise, former England batsman Geoff Boycott said he found similarities between Pujara and former South African batting beauty Barry Richards. Boycott told a website: "The best thing about him is he's got very high left elbow, uses his elbow and shoulder to get the bat very straight, very much like Barry Richards did."

Rahul Dravid, the man Pujara replaced at No. 3, said: "He has played a lot better than I did in my first five or six Tests. It took a long time for me to feel comfortable in Tests. As soon as Pujara came in, he looked the part. The composure of his innings was good. He didn't look ruffled at any stage. Let's be fair, these are the conditions he is used to."
