London, Mar 18: An India-born Manchester United fan was brutally assaulted by racist thugs while returning with his daughter after watching the club's FA Cup fourth round clash with Fulham. Prakash Patel, 56, was punched 18 times on his face at Trafford Bar in front of 200 witnesses on a packed tram, none of whom intervened or protested.

Bank officer Patel, a die-hard Manchester United fan from New Moston, suffered two black eyes and concussion in the assault after returning from Old Trafford. A resident of Manchester for the last 31 years, Patel said, "We are big fans, we've been going for 25 years and never had any trouble." He would now consider leaving Britain, he added.

Patel, who is shocked that passengers on board the tram just "stood and watched", is now planning to return to India. He was with his daughter Devyani, 21, when a group of men boarded the tram and began hurling racist slurs at him.

When he pleaded with them to "behave", they began punching Patel in the face and head.

Devyani said, "I was screaming at them to stop. What hurt the most is that nobody did anything, nobody said anything. I have lost my faith in (British) society." The Man U-Fulham match was on January 26 which the former won 4-1.

Recounting the incident, the father-daughter duo said the tram was packed with at least 200 people when seven men boarded and started hurling indecent racist comments.

"I asked them politely to behave and they started punching me from all sides. After two punches, I blacked out, but the carriage was so full that I was unconscious while standing up. Nobody did or said anything. They all just watched. I managed to lean against the side of the tram while they got out. They told me if you want finish this get off the tram," said the football fan.

"I had concussion and needed a CT scan and was off work for two weeks. Now I can't walk outside on my own and I will never go on public transport again. I lost three kgs in the two weeks after the attack," Patel said, adding he would now consider leaving Britain.
