India grab two bronze on first day

Nanjing (China), Aug 18: M Kavita Devi and T Lalchhanhima opened India’s medal account in the 2nd Asian Youth Games with a bronze medal each in girls’ judo and boys’ weightlifting respectively on the first day of the competition here on Saturday.

Kavita, participating in the multi-sporting event as an Independent Olympic Athlete following India’s ban from International Olympic Committee, beat Karchayeva Aida of Kazakhstan in bronze medal contest of the girls’ 44kg category.

The judoka from Manipur was beaten by Lin Wan Chu of Chinese Taipei in the third round but claimed the bronze via the repechage round after her victor reached the final.

In the boys’ 55kg, Vikas Kharb lost to Sithisane Soukphaxay of Laos in the first round.

Weightlifter Lalchhanhima won another bronze in boys’ 56kg category with a total lift of 228 (100 in snatch and 128 in clean and jerk). Ji Feiyong of China won the gold with a total lift of 239kg (104+135) while Nguyen Tran Anh Tuan of Vietnam bagged the silver with a lift of 235kg.

Chandrika Tarafdar, who last year became the first Indian to win a medal in the Youth World Weightlifting Championships, was disqualified in the girls’ 48kg category.

In squash, Tanvi Khanna won her first round match of the girls’ individual event against Nakahira Momoka of Japan in straight sets (11-9, 11-3, 11-7) in 17 minutes.

In girl’s table tennis Group E match, Sutirtha Mukherjee beat Tay Hui Li of Singapore 3-0 (11-1, 11-5, 11-2 in a 19-minute contest.

In tennis, RS Bhosale won her girl’s singles first round match against Olla Mourad of Qatar 6-0, 6-0. In men’s singles, Garvit Batra advanced to the second round after defeating Abdulla Ahli 6-0, 6-0.
