Puttur, Jul 11: In a rare development, students of a pre-university college in coastal Karnataka have taken an oath to abstain from WhatsApp, Facebook and other social media at least till the completion of their educational career.
Interestingly, it’s a voluntary and collective decision by the students of Ambika PU College located at Puttur in Dakshina Kannada district without any motivation by the parents or the teachers.
According to Subrahmanya Nattoja, Head of Ambika institutions, the management or teachers had no role in the students’ decision. “The students came forward and kept their views in front of us. We allowed them to organise the programme on their own,” he said.
All the students of the college converged at the auditorium recently and took the pledge in the name of their parents. Some students administered an oath, promising not to use social media during while pursuing studies.
The students said, “Social media like WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, Hike and IMO are being misused. The minds get diverted from the studies. It also motivates students to use shortcuts in life. Social media are being used for terrorism as well. Hence, we have to remain away from social media.”
“Many youths are getting addicted to social media and lose interest in studies. Many are worried over likes and comments in social media. The photographs are misused by the miscreants. Hence, we have taken a pledge not to use social media,” said one of the students.
