Mangaluru, Jun 21: An unidentified thief made a futile attempt to break open an automated teller machine (ATM) and steal money at Panemangaluru on the outskirts of the city today.
According to a complaint with the Bantwal Town police, the manager of Syndicate Bank’s branch in Panemangaluru got a call from a man around 4 a.m. informing of a siren from their ATM.
The manager went to the branch to see the ATM’s monitor damaged and the door below the monitor broken. A closed-circuit television camera had also been damaged.
The manager checked footage from another CCTV camera and saw a man damaging the ATM and its parts on Thursday between 3.30 a.m. and 4 a.m.
The manager said that the person also tried to steal money from the ATM.
The police have registered a case under Sections 380 (theft), 457 (lurking house-tresspass or house-breaking by night) and 511 (attempting to commit offences punishable with imprisonment for life or imprisonment) of the Indian Penal Code.
