Mangaluru, Aug 17: Normal life has thrown out of gear in many parts of Dakshina Kannada district as heavy rains continued to pound the region causing foods in low-lying areas.
As on Friday, the water level in Netravati River at Bantwal was 9.5 meters well above the danger level of 8.5 meters. The water level of Netravati River at Uppinangady and Kumaradhara River were closing the danger marks at 25.5 meters each with danger levels being 28.5 meters and 29.5 meters respectively.
Official sources said that nearly 550 people from more than 100 houses located or close to the Netravati riverbank in Bantwal taluk alone have been shifted to safer places.
This is one of the precautionary measures taken by the Dakshina Kannada district administration after an increase in the water flow in the river amidst torrential rains.
According to reports, the villagers were shifted from five areas near Panemangaluru, three in B Mooda Village, one each from the villages of Barimaru, Thumbe, B Kasaba and Navoor.
More than 150 people have been provided shelter at Sri Sharada High School, Panemangaluru, Old Inspection Bungalow, Bantwal Kasaba Village and Zilla Panchayat School, Navoor. Others have relocated themselves in their relatives’ houses.
