Mangaluru, Jun 12: At least three persons were killed and eight others suffered critical injuries in a ghastly mishap at Kodaje near Mani in Dakshina Kannada district on Sunday.
Thejas (22), Varsha (19) and Sandhya(21), who were on board an ill-fated Maruti Omni car died on the spot when their vehicle rammed into a speeding KSRTC bus on Mani-Mysuru state highway.
The injured have been identified as Namitha, Pavithra, Sharanya, Shobha, Sunil, Yakshi, Nayana and Navya. All of them have been admitted to a private hospital in Mangaluru. Among them the condition of two is said to be extremely critical.
All the three deceased and eight injured were the employees of Sanjeeva Shetty cloth shop located in Puttur. They were heading to a temple at Panolibail.
According to sources, Thejas, who was driving the Omni while overtaking an auto-rickshaw rammed into an oncoming bus. The impact was such that the Omni was reduced into a bundle of metals.
Local people helped the injured and took them to Kalladka government hospital for preliminary treatment. Later all the injured were shifted to Mangaluru. The dead bodies were shifted to Puttur government hospital.
Dakshina Kannada SP Bhushan Gulabrao Borase, Puttur DySP Bhaskar Rai, Bantwal Circle Inspector Belliyappa among others visited the accident spot for investigation. The accident led to traffic jam on highway for some time. Vittla police are investigating the matter.
