Mysuru, Nov 7: Public Works Department Minister HC Mahadevappa on Monday said only feudalists and communalists can call Chief Minister Siddaramaiah as casteist and anti-Dalit.

Addressing a gathering during the 530th birth anniversary celebration of saint-poet Kanakadasa here, Mahadevappa, also the district in-charge minister, without taking any names said that a section of fundamentalists describes Siddaramaiah as a casteist.

"Siddaramaiah has introduced various programmes for the benefit all sections of society. How can he be a casteist? Those who don't want any positive change in the society, those who advocate communalism and feudalism will comment against Siddaramaiah," the minister said.

It can be noted that former minister V Srinivas Prasad, who crossed over to the BJP after he was dropped from the Siddaramaiah Cabinet in June 2016, had recently described the chief minister as casteist.

Prasad had claimed that Siddaramaiah has been systematically suppressing the Dalits as well as the Muslim leaders in the Congress, while only helping people of his own community people, including former IPS officer Kempaiah.

The minister said Siddaramaiah-led state government has been spreading values and teachings of Kanakadasa across the state. Kanakadas has preached humanity through his works. He advocated that humanity is greater than any community, Mahadevappa said.

MLA M K Somashekar, in his keynote address, said casteism is rampant in the society and Kanakadasa had questioned it. Somashekar said only a few people are following the principles of Budda, Basavanna, Kanaka and Ambedkar.

Tanveer Sait, Minister for Primary and Secondary Education, promised to establish a Kanaka School if the Kaginele Kanaka Guru Peetha gives a proposal.

Shivanandapuri Swami of Kaginele Kanaka Guru Peetha, MLA Vasu, writer C Naganna, Mysuru Urban Development Authority chairman D Dhruvakumar, Mysore Paints and Varnish Limited chairman H A Venkatesh, Zoo Authority of Karnataka chairperson Mallige Veeresh, and Deputy Commissioner D Randeep were present.

Earlier in the day, a procession with a portrait of Kanakadasa was taken out from the Kote Anjaneya Swamy temple. Folk artists performed as the procession passed through K R Circle, Devaraj Urs Road.

Kanakadasa Jayanti was also celebrated in Hassan, Mandya and Chamarajanagar districts.

Udupi, Dec 1: A horrific case of alleged rape has unfolded in Udupi, where a worker from a Hindutva organisation, previously arrested and released on bail for harassing a young woman, is now accused of waylaying and sexually assaulting her.

The arrested individual has been identified as Pradeep Poojary (26), a member of the Hindu Jagarana Vedike's Nairkode unit in Perdur.

Poojary had allegedly been relentlessly harassing the young woman, pressuring her to marry him. When she bravely stood up to him and refused his demands, she filed a formal complaint at the Hiriyadka police station. He was subsequently arrested in that initial harassment case but was later granted bail.

According to police reports, driven by the same malicious grudge, Poojary allegedly intercepted the woman again on November 29. While she was walking through a deserted area, the accused is claimed to have threatened her by grabbing her neck. When she again refused to marry him, he allegedly proceeded to rape her.

The survivor immediately informed her family about the traumatic assault. Following this, her parents lodged a complaint at the Udupi women’s police station.

Police arrested Poojary again and produced him before the court. He has since been remanded to judicial custody.

While monitoring social media activity on Tuesday, Kankanady Town PSI Anitha Nikkam identified the Instagram handle ‘team_targetttt_900’ for posting a hate message alongside images of lethal weapons. Another account, ‘team_nagara_900’, allegedly shared a threatening post targeting activist Bharath Kumdelu, tagging additional pages such as KARAVALI-OFFICIAL.

Several other accounts — including ‘immu_bhai.fan’, ‘target_boy_900’, ‘kings_of_manglore’, ‘team_target_boys.900’, ‘arshad_mangalore’, ‘target_ka19_ullal’, ‘team_target__’, ‘troll_tigersz_900’, ‘tr_group_900’, and ‘team_target_900’ — are also under scrutiny for spreading similar inflammatory material, police said.

Authorities have urged citizens, especially young social media users, to report suspicious pages and avoid engaging with groups that glorify violence or threaten individuals. Online hate can quickly escalate into real-world harm, and police stress that sharing or promoting such content can attract legal consequences.
