Udupi, Nov 22: A police team defused a “bomb” planted by “terrorists” at the Service Bus Stand here on Tuesday. But, neither was it a real bomb, nor the terrorists were real. It was a mock drill.
Superintendent of Police Sanjeev M. Patil told presspersons here that the “bomb” was planted near the bus stand as part of the “Operation Sagar Kavach”, a security drill, which was on in the district.
A police team had managed to defuse the “bomb”, he said. The security was tightened at important locations in Udupi district as part of the drill.
The intention of this operation is to test the preparedness of the police, Coastal Security Police and other security personnel in the district.
“By conducting such exercises frequently, we improve our preparedness and develop the standard operating procedures,” he said.
“These exercises help in dealing with such situations whenever they occurred. The work by the police during such security exercises is evaluated by the top security and intelligence agencies,” he added.
