Bengaluru, Mar 29: Malikayya Guttedar, a former minister and sitting MLA from Afzalpur constituency, which was once known for gang wars and ‘supari’ killings, in Kalaburgi district, has decided to quit Congress party and join Bharatiya Janata Party.

Guttedar, who has won six times in Afzalpur constituency from three parties – Indian National Congress, Janata Dal (Secular) and Karnataka Congress Party – on Thursday met BJP state president B S Yeddyurappa reportedly to confirm whether he would be fielded from the same constituency this time after joining the party.
62-year-old Guttedar was ministry aspirant in chief minister Siddaramaiah-led Karnataka cabinet. When Siddaramaiah chose young Priyank Kharge who also hails from the same district, as a minister, Guttedar had accused him the CM of sidelining senior leaders.
Guttedar, who won as Congress candidate in 1985, 1989 and 2008 from the constituency, was elected to the Assembly in 1994 as KCP candidate and in 1999 he won on the JD(S) ticket. In 2013 he won as a Congress candidate. He was a Minister in the J H Patel government.
In Afzalpur constituency, as many as 40 per cent of voters are Lingayats, followed by the backward class communities Kurubas and Kabbaligas who, combined together, account for 30 per cent, followed by Dalits and Muslims, who form a significant chunk.
