Ahmadabad, Nov 29: Gujarat Chief Minister and BJP's PM candidate Narendra Modi was in contact with the Bangalore woman, involved in the stalk-gate controversy, as early as 2005.

A picture taken during the inauguration ceremony of 'Sharad Utsav' held in Gujarat in 2005 show Narendra Modi animatedly interacting with a woman, alleged to be the victim of stalk-gate scandal, in the presence of IAS Officer Pradeep Sharma.

The picture published in the Gulail are presented as a proof that Modi 'knew' the woman at least five years before Gujarat state machinery mounted a round the clock vigil on the her, in August 2009.

As per the affidavit filed by Sharma in SC, the woman met Modi for the first time during the inauguration ceremony of 'Sharad Utsav' held in October 2005.

The affidavit further states that Modi invited the woman to email any other suggestions she might have and provided her with his personal email address.

The woman replied to Modi and thanked him for his visit. The initial email was followed by a series of emails between the two, quotes Gulail.

IAS Officer Pradeep Sharma was the collector of Kachchh from 2003 and 2005, and it is reported that the woman communicated the details of her ongoing conversation with Gujarat Chief Minister to him.

'She had been assigned a role of organizing the reception of guests; she was provided the appropriate monetary fees in exchange for her services. Concurrently, Shri Modi and Ms. Soni had begun to exchange text messages (SMS), which she communicated to the Petitioner (Sharma). She further mentioned that she was planning to meet the Chief Minister,' quotes an excerpt of Sharma's affidavit filed in Supreme Court in May 2011.

Sharma was further assured that conversations- via text messages and e-mails- were indeed being pursued when he was witness to a face-to-face interaction between them.

Narendra Modi arrived in Bhuj from Ahmadabad in first week of October 2005 to attend the three-day-long festival.

He even stayed for a night inside one of the tents, specially erected for him.

The woman came to see Modi in the morning he was scheduled to fly back. As per the allegations of Sharma, it appeared that Modi was aware of the woman's presence and she was present in one of the tents on the night Modi was staying there.

Mangaluru, Dec 15: Air India Express has announced that it will resume direct flight services between Mangaluru and Muscat from March 2026, restoring an important international air link for passengers from the coastal region.

Airport authorities said the service will operate twice a week—on Sundays and Tuesdays—from March 1. The initial flights are scheduled on March 3, 8 and 10, followed by March 15 and 17, with the same operating pattern to continue thereafter. The flight duration is approximately three hours and 25 minutes.

The Mangaluru–Muscat route was earlier operated under the 2025 summer schedule, with services beginning on July 14. At that time, Air India Express had operated four flights a week before suspending the service.

Officials said the summer schedule will come into effect from March 29, after which changes in flight timings and departure schedules from Mangaluru are expected. Passengers have been advised to check the latest schedules while planning their travel.

The resumption of direct flights to Muscat is expected to significantly benefit expatriates, business travellers and others, further strengthening Mangaluru’s air connectivity with the Gulf region.

Mangaluru, Dec 3: A group of Congress workers gathered at the Mangaluru International Airport on Wednesday to welcome AICC general secretary K C Venugopal, but the reception quickly turned into a display of support for Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar.

Venugopal arrived in the city to participate in the centenary commemoration of the historic dialogue between Mahatma Gandhi and Narayana Guru. The event, organised by the Sivagiri Mutt, Varkala, in association with the Mangalore University Sri Narayana Guru Study Chair, is being held on the university’s Konaje campus.

KPCC general secretary Mithun Rai and several party workers had assembled at the airport to receive Venugopal. However, the moment he stepped out, workers began raising slogans backing Shivakumar.

The university programme will be inaugurated by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.

This show of support comes just a day after Siddaramaiah remarked that Shivakumar would lead the government “when the high command decides.” The chief minister made the comment after a breakfast meeting at Shivakumar’s residence—another public display of camaraderie between the two leaders amid ongoing attempts by the party high command to downplay their leadership rivalry.

SHRIMP.jpg

Mangaluru, Dec 7: A rare bamboo shrimp has been rediscovered on mainland India more than 70 years after it was last reported, confirming for the first time the presence of Atyopsis spinipes in the country. The find was made by researchers from the Centre for Climate Change Studies at Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology, Chennai, during surveys in Karnataka and Odisha.

The team — shrimp expert Dr S Prakash, PhD scholar K Kunjulakshmi, and Mangaluru-based researcher Maclean Antony Santos — combined field surveys, ecological assessments and DNA analysis to identify the elusive species. Their findings, published in Zootaxa, resolve decades of taxonomic confusion stemming from a 1951 report that misidentified the species as Atyopsis moluccensis without strong evidence.

The shrimp has now been confirmed at two locations: the Mulki–Pavanje estuary near Mangaluru and the Kuakhai River in Bhubaneswar. Historical specimens from the Andaman Islands, previously labelled as A. moluccensis, were also found to be misidentified and actually belong to A. spinipes.

The rediscovery began after an aquarium hobbyist in Odisha spotted a shrimp in 2022, prompting systematic surveys across Udupi, Karwar and Mangaluru. Four female specimens were collected in Mulki and one in Odisha, all genetically matching.

Researchers warn the species may exist in very small, vulnerable populations as freshwater habitats face increasing pressure from pollution, sand mining and infrastructure development. All verified specimens have been deposited with the Zoological Survey of India for future reference.
