Mangaluru, May 7: Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner A B Ibrahim said that the general election to gram panchayats - 2015 would be held in a total of 1,309 polling booths in 227 gram panchayats in the district on May 29.
Briefing media persons in his office on Thursday, he said that the elections would be conducted for a total of 3,399 seats in 1,108 different wards under 227 gram panchayats in Dakshina Kannada.
Out of the total number of gram panchayats in the district, Kotekar in Mangaluru taluk and Vittal in Bantwal taluk have been upgraded to town panchayats, while Venoor and Arambodi in Belthangady taluk and Pudu in Bantwal taluk have not completed their terms. Hence polling will not be conducted in these five gram panchayats, he informed.
The total number of registered voters under 227 gram panchayats in 10,52,741 out of which, there are 5,24597 male and 5,28,144 female voters. There are a total of 55 gram panchayats in Mangaluru taluk, 57 gram panchayats in Bantwal taluk, 46 in Belthangady taluk, 41 in Puttur taluk and 28 gram panchayats in Sullia taluk.
Mr Ibrahim said that out of the total 1,309 polling booths, 227 booths across Dakshina Kannada had been designated as sensitive booths while 204 booths had been designated as hyper-sensitive polling booths. The Returning Officers and assistant returning officers have been appointed in all five taluks, he said.
Padua High School, Mangaluru has been selected as the mustering, de-mustering and counting centre during the elections in Mangaluru taluk, Infant Jesus English Medium School, Modankapu in Bantwal taluk, SDM Pre-University College, Ujire in Belthangady taluk, Vivekananda English Medium High School, Thenkila Puttur in Puttur taluk and Nehru Memorial College, Sullia in Sullia taluk, he informed mediapersons, adding that he expected fair and peaceful elections in the district.
Polls in Dakshina Kannada on May 29
Dakshina Kannada will go to polls on May 29, along with 14 other districts in the first phase. The second phase of elections will be held in the remaining districts in Karnataka on June 2.
As per the schedule announced by the Karnataka State Election Commission, the model code of conduct will come into place in Dakshina Kannada from Sunday onwards. The notification for elections will be issued on May 11 while, the last date for candidates to submit their nomination papers will be May 18. The scrutiny of nominations will be conducted on May 19, while the last date for candidates to withdraw their nominations is May 21.
Following this, the election voting process will be held on May 29 from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. onwards. The counting of votes will be on June 5 and results will be announced subsequently.
