Bengaluru, Nov 19: A woman, posing as a non-Indian resident nurse, allegedly duped a techie of Rs. 4.7 lakh by promising to send ornaments he could use to help her buy a house.

Rachana Karam Vaidya, who introduced herself as a nurse in United States of America, befriended Ravi Kumar, a resident of Nelamangala in Bengaluru on a social networking website.

Ramesh, who works as an engineer with a private firm in Rajarajeshwari Nagar, in his complaint to police stated that Rachana told him that she would be visiting Karnataka soon and was interested in seeing historical places, and asked him to arrange a house for rent during her stay in Bengaluru. When Ramesh told her about his financial constraints, Rachana promised to send her gold ornaments and money to pay for the house.

"On October 2, I received a call from a woman posing as an official of the customs department at the international airport in New Delhi. She asked me to pay Rs 38,000 to claim a parcel that had arrived for me from the US. She requested me to deposit money into the account of airport officer, Suman Devi. I trusted her and deposited the money on October 3," the techie stated in his complaint.

Ramesh received another call from a woman on October 10, asking him to deposit Rs 1.62 lakh for service clearance. Then, he got a call, seeking Rs 2.70 lakh towards tax code due to the weight of the parcel. He deposited the money on both occasions.

"On October 25, a man claiming to be Saurabh Joshi, general manager, regional office, RBI, Bengaluru, called me. He told me that the money I had sent to the various accounts wasn't deposited. He wanted me to deposit Rs 4.70 lakh again. He disconnected my call when I expressed anger," the complaint stated.

When contacted, RBI authorities told Ramesh that Joshi was not one of their employees in Bengaluru. Rachana deleted her Facebook account on October 26 and the numbers she used to call Ramesh were switched off, the police said. The Ashok Nagar police have approached cyber crime experts to trace the suspects.

Mangaluru, Dec 3: A group of Congress workers gathered at the Mangaluru International Airport on Wednesday to welcome AICC general secretary K C Venugopal, but the reception quickly turned into a display of support for Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar.

Venugopal arrived in the city to participate in the centenary commemoration of the historic dialogue between Mahatma Gandhi and Narayana Guru. The event, organised by the Sivagiri Mutt, Varkala, in association with the Mangalore University Sri Narayana Guru Study Chair, is being held on the university’s Konaje campus.

KPCC general secretary Mithun Rai and several party workers had assembled at the airport to receive Venugopal. However, the moment he stepped out, workers began raising slogans backing Shivakumar.

The university programme will be inaugurated by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.

This show of support comes just a day after Siddaramaiah remarked that Shivakumar would lead the government “when the high command decides.” The chief minister made the comment after a breakfast meeting at Shivakumar’s residence—another public display of camaraderie between the two leaders amid ongoing attempts by the party high command to downplay their leadership rivalry.

Mangaluru: In a significant step to curb online hate and intimidation, Mangaluru City Police have registered a suo motu case against multiple Instagram accounts accused of circulating alleged provocative and threatening content.

While monitoring social media activity on Tuesday, Kankanady Town PSI Anitha Nikkam identified the Instagram handle ‘team_targetttt_900’ for posting a hate message alongside images of lethal weapons. Another account, ‘team_nagara_900’, allegedly shared a threatening post targeting activist Bharath Kumdelu, tagging additional pages such as KARAVALI-OFFICIAL.

Several other accounts — including ‘immu_bhai.fan’, ‘target_boy_900’, ‘kings_of_manglore’, ‘team_target_boys.900’, ‘arshad_mangalore’, ‘target_ka19_ullal’, ‘team_target__’, ‘troll_tigersz_900’, ‘tr_group_900’, and ‘team_target_900’ — are also under scrutiny for spreading similar inflammatory material, police said.

Authorities have urged citizens, especially young social media users, to report suspicious pages and avoid engaging with groups that glorify violence or threaten individuals. Online hate can quickly escalate into real-world harm, and police stress that sharing or promoting such content can attract legal consequences.

Udupi, Dec 1: A horrific case of alleged rape has unfolded in Udupi, where a worker from a Hindutva organisation, previously arrested and released on bail for harassing a young woman, is now accused of waylaying and sexually assaulting her.

The arrested individual has been identified as Pradeep Poojary (26), a member of the Hindu Jagarana Vedike's Nairkode unit in Perdur.

Poojary had allegedly been relentlessly harassing the young woman, pressuring her to marry him. When she bravely stood up to him and refused his demands, she filed a formal complaint at the Hiriyadka police station. He was subsequently arrested in that initial harassment case but was later granted bail.

According to police reports, driven by the same malicious grudge, Poojary allegedly intercepted the woman again on November 29. While she was walking through a deserted area, the accused is claimed to have threatened her by grabbing her neck. When she again refused to marry him, he allegedly proceeded to rape her.

The survivor immediately informed her family about the traumatic assault. Following this, her parents lodged a complaint at the Udupi women’s police station.

Police arrested Poojary again and produced him before the court. He has since been remanded to judicial custody.
