Mangalore, Nov 20: President Pranab Mukherjee on Tuesday presented the prestigious Indira Gandhi National Service Scheme Best University Award for 2012-13 to Mangalore University at a function in Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi.
The Vice-Chancellor of the university T. C. Shivashankara Murthy and the coordinator of the National Service Scheme (NSS) of the university, during 2012-13, Gananatha Ekkar received the award from the President. The award comprised Rs. two lakh cash, a certificate and a memento.
“It is a rare experience and a great day for Mangalore University. The credit of the award should first go to all NSS volunteers and then to all NSS officers and principals of colleges. The award will inspire all NSS volunteers,” said Vice Chancellor T. C. Shivashankara Murthy.
The Vice-Chancellor said that a top official in the Union Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, which selected the university for the award, has told him that the ministry would recommend the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development to allow NSS as an optional subject in colleges. The official said this after the Vice-Chancellor told him that Mangalore University was considering the participation of students in NSS activities for awarding credits, under the credit-based semester scheme in its colleges.
Prof. Murthy said that from among 500 universities in the country 13 universities had reached final round of selection. Mangalore University had been chosen for the award from among them. The university was getting this award for the first time. He also said that as the university has received the top award it cannot apply for it for the next 10 years.
Some of the yardsticks for selection included achieving the target of enrolment of NSS volunteers, conducting special camps, asset creation, participation in health awareness campaigns, conducting national integration camps, etc.
On the occasion of Indira Gandhi's 96th birth anniversary, Mr. Mukherjee also gave NSS Best Plus 2 Council Award for 2012-13 to Directorate of Higher Secondary Education, Thiruvananthpuram while Upcoming University Award was presented to Kumaun University, Nainital.
