As part of precautionary measures to prevent violence, the police took dozens of protesters into custody in front of the office of Zilla Panchayat in Mangaluru.

The police action comes after the protesters threatened to storm into the Netravati auditorium in the premises of Zilla Panchayat when the birth anniversary of the Tiger of Mysuru was underway.

However, tight police security had been deployed in the area as Sangh Parivar and Christian outfits in Mangaluru had warned against such a celebration in the city.

Led by VHP leader Jagadish Shenava, Bajrang Dal leader Sharan Pumpwell, and BJP’s Christian face Franklin Monteiro raised provocative slogans against Tipu while slamming Karnataka government for making Tipu Jayanti a government event.

The police immediately swung into action and control the situation by taking the agitators into custody.

Posters, banners targeted

Meanwhile, miscreants have blackened the posters glorifying Tipu Sultan at Pumpwell Circle in the city.

The local unit of Social Democratic Party of India had put up posters at the Pumpwell Circle to mark Tipu’s birth anniversary.

On Tuesday morning they were found desecrated. Miscreants had speared black ink on the posters and garlanded them with footwear.

The police rushed to the spot and removed the posters to prevent untoward incidents.

Three arrested in Moodbidri

Moodbidri, Nov 10: Sleuths from police department have arrested three from Madikeri in Kodagu on Sunday night, for allegedly damaging a Tipu Jayanti banner at Thodar in Moodbidri limits.

Rohan (27), Kavan (28) and Darshan (31) from Madikeri are the three accused arrested by the police.

It is learnt that the three youth had come to Mangaluru from Madikeri by a car on Sunday and were returning back the same night. On the return journey, they spotted a Tipu Jayanti banner set up on the roadside in Thodar, parked the car and vandalised it, before resuming their journey towards Madikeri.

Observing this, the police in Thodar noted the registration number of their car and passed the information to their counterparts in Beluvai who were on the watch. Stopping this car in Beluvai, the police apprehended the three youth.

A case has been registered against the youth and further action will be taken against them.

Bengaluru: 'Nati koli saaru' (country chicken curry) considered one of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s favourites along with steaming hot idlis was on the breakfast menu at Deputy CM D K Shivakumar’s residence on Tuesday, according to official sources.

The spread also included 'nati koli' fry, vada and pongal, among other items, they said.

In an apparent show of unity, Siddaramaiah visited Shivakumar’s residence for breakfast, just days after the two leaders shared a meal amid a simmering power tussle in the state Congress.

Siddaramaiah drove to the Deputy CM’s residence in Sadashivanagar, where he was received by Shivakumar and his brother D K Suresh, who is a former Congress MP.

Suresh and Kunigal MLA H D Ranganath, a relative of Shivakumar, joined them for breakfast, which featured a mix of vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes.

Speaking to reporters later, Siddaramaiah said Shivakumar had invited him during his visit to the CM’s residence for breakfast on Saturday.

Asked about the difference between the two meals, the chief minister said, "At his (Shivakumar’s) house it was non-veg, while at my house it was veg. He is a vegetarian, I am a non-vegetarian. I had not prepared non-veg. I told DK to get chicken from the village as you won’t get the original in Bengaluru."

Shivakumar said he had initially invited Siddaramaiah to his residence, but the CM had suggested visiting his place first and reciprocating later. "It was a vegetarian breakfast at the CM’s house on Saturday," he noted.

"Today, I invited him (the CM) to my house. He enjoyed the breakfast, which had his Mysuru taste," Shivakumar added. At this point, Siddaramaiah remarked that Shivakumar’s wife is also from Mysuru.

Saturday’s breakfast at Siddaramaiah’s official residence, held as part of efforts by the Congress high command to ease tensions in the leadership dispute between the two, reportedly included idlis and sambar, according to official sources.
