Puttur, Dec 20: An accident involving the death of a woman at Kabaka in Puttur soon snowballed into a tense situation ending in saffron activists laying siege to the police station in Puttur.
A Maruti Omni car hit a female pedestrian walking on the street in Kabaka on the outskirts of Puttur on Friday night resulting in her immediate death.
The deceased has been identified as Kusuma (35), wife of Kabaka resident Giriappa Gowda.
Kusuma had been walking along the side of the road with other women after working as a karsevak at a temple in Adyalaguli near Kanaka, when the Maruti Omni driven by Kutruppadi resident Farooq hit her while plying from Puttur to Kabaka. Due to the force of the collision, Kusuma was thrown on the road and suffered severe injury to her head and died soon after.
Driver assaulted
A tense situation prevailed on the spot soon after the incident and the driver of the Omni Farooq was waylaid and assaulted by the locals gathered at the scene. During this, the town traffic police arrived at the scene and managed to disperse the crowd.
Activists lay siege to police station
In the aftermath of the incident, over a 100 activists belonging to saffron organisations including Prasad Bhandary, Arun Kumar Puttila, Murali Krishna Hasantadka and Vasanth Kabaka laid siege to Puttur town police station.
The activists demanded that police should tender an apology for allegedly having used insulting words while dispersing the crowd at the scene of the assault on the driver earlier.
Thereafter, the situation became calm after talks were held at the police station under the leadership of Dr Prasad Bhandary.
