New Delhi, Feb 11: Mehfuz Ali Khan was only a private secretary to jailed mining baron G Janardhan Reddy. But he seems to be not an ordinary person as his bank account shows that the total transactions he made was whopping Rs 103.09 core in just nine months. Besides he had also owned 250 acres of land near Bangalore International Airport.

The CBI, which is probing the illegal mining activities of Reddy, also unearthed the rags to riches story of Khan.

Khan, who is currently under the judicial custody in connection with the illegal mining, was once an eyes and ears of former minister Reddy and managed all his affairs.

The supplementary charge sheet filed by the central investigating agency in the CBI special court at Hyderabad recently shows that Khan a native of Guntakal in Andhra Pradesh was a friend of Suresh Babu, Kampli MLA. Through Babu, an engineering graduate Khan got the job in Bramhani Industries limited, owned by Reddy in 2007. In 2008 Khan became close to Reddy.

In early 2009 he resigned from the Bramhani Industries limited and floated new company Devi Enterprises a partnership with one V Chandrashekar in March 2009 at Bellary. This firm opened a bank account in ING Vysya Ban at Bellary Account no : 202011012661 in March 2009. Between 30.3.2009 from 13.12.2009, the company made total transaction of Rs 103.09 crore.

The CBI said during the investigation it was found that Devi enterprises had entered agreement on excavation and sell the iron ore at cheaper rates with several mining firms.

Khan, who was arrested by the CBI September 2012, also took gun licence by claiming that he was private secretary to the then tourism minister Janardhan Reddy.

He also entered into an agreement for the sale of land around 250 acres near Bangalore International Airport with Third Eye Infrastructure firm.

The CBI charge sheet also revealed that the then chief minister of Karnataka virtually acted as per Reddy's instructions in granting mining permission.

Abdul Wahid, Director of Veeyam Private Limited approached the then chief minister seeking renewal of his mining leases in 20.23 hectares land in Bellary in 2009. Then Wahid was told that without the consent of Reddy, no proposal on mining leases would move in the Department of Mines and Geology in Karnataka.

Then Reddy and Khan both approached Wahid and said latter would be real incharge of the mines but a small percentage would be given to him (Wahid). After Wahid agreed for that, Devi Enterprises of Khan signed an agreement in which Wahid has to sale the ore to Devi. Soon after this, the CM approved the mining lease belong to Wahid, says the CBI charge sheet.

Mangaluru, Dec 15: Educational institutions in Mangaluru that rely on the popular Mangala Stadium for their annual sports events are bracing for an inconvenience as the city's key sporting venue is set to close its gates for a significant upgrade. The stadium is expected to be unavailable for approximately two months starting from January 15, 2026.

The closure is necessitated by a proposed overhaul of the stadium's facilities, with a special focus on upgrading the synthetic track. Pradeep Dsouza, Assistant Director of the District of Youth Empowerment and Sports (DYES), Dakshina Kannada, confirmed the development.

"Experts have visited the stadium, conducted a thorough inspection, and have given the go-ahead for a complete makeover," Dsouza stated. "Funds have been allocated for the project, and we are currently awaiting the final green signal from state officials to commence the work. We anticipate that the work will likely begin in the second week of January. Consequently, we have stopped renting out the stadium to colleges and other organizations in preparation for the upgrade."

The timing presents a logistical challenge for colleges, as many schools have already concluded their sports meets.

"Colleges will now be organizing their events and will need to find alternative locations to host their sports meets," Dsouza added. He suggested a few potential venues, including the Dakshina Kannada police ground, University College grounds, Panambur grounds, Swaraj Maidan in Moodbidri, and the Mangalore University sports grounds in Konaje.

However, many institutions note that finding a comparable venue will be difficult. While the DK police ground and University College grounds are closer to the city center, they do not possess the extensive facilities and infrastructure offered by Mangala Stadium.

Dr. P Dayananda Pai - P Satisha Govt First Grade College, Carstreet, is one such institution dependent on the stadium. Principal Jayakar Bhandary expressed hope for a swift completion of the work. "We expect the work to be completed at the earliest. If not, we will be forced to look for other venues to host the sports day for our students," Bhandary said, highlighting the pressing need for the city's main sporting facility.

Mangaluru police have arrested a 27-year-old NRI on his return from Saudi Arabia in connection with an Instagram post allegedly containing derogatory and provocative remarks about the Hindu religion, officials said on Monday.

The accused, Abdul Khader Nehad, a resident of Ulaibettu in Mangaluru, was working in Saudi Arabia when the post was uploaded, police said.

A suo motu case was registered at the Bajpe police station on October 11 after an allegedly offensive post circulated from the Instagram account ‘team_sdpi_2025’. Police said the content was flagged for being provocative and derogatory in nature.

During the investigation, technical analysis traced the Instagram post to Nehad, who was residing abroad at the time, a senior police officer said. Based on these findings, a Look Out Circular (LOC) was issued against him.

On December 14, Nehad arrived from Saudi Arabia at Calicut International Airport in Kerala, where he was taken into custody on arrival. Police said further investigation is underway.
