Udupi, Mar 10: Days after Bharatiya Janata Party supremo Amit Shah held a secret meeting with a influential seers of coastal Karnataka seeking their support in the upcoming state assembly elections, a prominent seer from Udupi has expressed his willingness to take a political plunge from the saffron party.

Laxmivara Tirtha Swami, the chief pontiff of Shiroor Mutt, one of the Ashta Mutts of Udupi, on Saturday declared that he was ready to contest from Udupi Assembly constituency in the forthcoming elections as an independent candidate if he doesn’t get BJP ticket.
The seer clarified that if he gets the BJP ticket, he will contest as a BJP candidate. Interestingly, he hailed sitting Udupi MLA and State Minister for Fisheries, Youth Empowerment and Sports, as “model MLA for the State.”
Indirectly expressing displeasure over the approach of local unit of BJP, the seer praised the saffron party’s national leadership. “If I contest as an depended candidate, BJP votes will naturally spilt and it will be a gain for the Congress,” he warned.
To a query, the seer said that it was not necessary for him to consult other seers of Ashta Mutts before taking a decision on entering electoral politics.
Asked whether he would accept tickets from Shiv Sena or Sri Ram Sena, the seer reiterated that he would rather contest as an independent candidate if he doesn’t get a ticket from BJP.
