Results of IIT-JEE announced, only 5 girls make it to top 100

June 19, 2014

Kolkata, Jun 19: Results of the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology Joint Entrance Exam (IIT-JEE advanced) were announced today with only five girls making it to the top 100 qualifying students.

IIT-JEE
Girls formed only 11 per cent of the total qualifying students, JEE in-charge and IIT Kharagpur professor M K Panigrahi said.

Rajasthan's Chitraang Murdia topped JEE (Advanced) securing 334 out of a total of 360 marks. Aditi from IIT Roorkee zone is the topper amongst girl candidates securing seventh rank in the common merit list.

A total of 27,151 candidates out of the registered 1,26,997 qualified in the examination from across the country, he said.

When asked about the reason for poor performance of girls in the exam, Aditi told PTI over phone that girls are not encouraged by either their parents or the social system to get into engineering.

"I got family support for engineering but most of my friends opted for medical or commerce subjects. That is the reason why you have less girl students in engineering. It does not mean girls cannot become good engineers," she said.

Officials of FIITJEE, which conducts coaching classes for IIT aspirants, said the number of girl students were lesser.

"It is a trend that girls avoid engineering. We only had a handful of girl students," Debdoot Banerjee, deputy general manager of the coaching institute said.

Altogether, 19,416 students figured in the common merit list (CML).

Besides these, 6,000 students appeared in OBC, 4,400 in SC and 1,250 in ST merit lists.

A total of 243 candidates with disability cleared in the exam.

Compared to last year, 3,500 more candidates have qualified in CML and there was an increase of qualified candidates in all categories.

Candidates who have cleared the JEE (Advanced) can now seek entry into the 16 IITs and also Indian School of Mines in Dhanbad.

There are altogether 9784 seats available in all these institutes.

IIT aspirants have to clear two-phased JEE(Mains) and JEE (Advanced) exams to gain entry into the elite institutes.

IIT-Kharagpur had coordinated the test this year conducted on May 25.

To help JEE advanced qualifiers take the next step, it has now launched a website www.why.iitkgp.ac.in.

The joint implementation committee of JEE (Advanced) 2014 has decided to allow twice the number in each category to fill choices for various undergraduate courses in IITs, Panigrahi said.

The choice filling portal for qualifying candidates will be operative from June 20-24, he said.

Udupi: The pontiffs of Sri Paryaya Puttige Mutt, the sacred seat of Jagadguru Shrimad Madhvacharya Moola Samsthanam, have submitted a proposal to the Prime Minister seeking comprehensive development for Udupi district.

Proposal for International Airport

A key request is the establishment of an international airport. Highlighting that around 1,000 acres of land are available and suitable, the pontiffs noted that the existing Mangalore Airport provides limited international connectivity. They suggested the airport be developed under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) or as a Greenfield Airport to boost trade, education, healthcare, and spiritual tourism.

Metro and Rapid Transit Connectivity

The proposal also calls for Metro Rail or Rapid Transit between Mangaluru and Udupi. The 55 km coastal stretch experiences heavy daily commuter traffic, causing congestion. The district administration is ready to prepare an initial project report for a Mass Rapid Transit corridor and requested inclusion under national urban mobility programmes to ensure safe, green, and time-efficient regional transport.

Port and Coastal Development

The pontiffs urged the development of an international-standard port with a cruise terminal along Udupi’s coast. They also requested fast-tracking of pending coastal tourism projects and revising Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) norms to encourage sustainable infrastructure and hospitality investment.

IT, AI and Technological Infrastructure

Support was sought for an IT and AI Innovation Park with incubation facilities under Digital India and Startup India initiatives. The proposal also emphasized the need for strengthened data security and cloud computing infrastructure to boost India’s technological independence.

Sports and Education Initiatives

The pontiffs requested national sports status for Kambala, along with financial and infrastructure support. They also sought the establishment of an AIIMS in Udupi, a new IIT campus, and approval for an IIM to promote higher education in the district.

Representation to the Prime Minister

Sri Sugunendra Tirtha Pontiff and Sri Sushrendra Tirtha Swamiji represented the pontiffs in submitting the comprehensive development proposal to the Prime Minister during his recent visit.

Mangaluru, Dec 3: A group of Congress workers gathered at the Mangaluru International Airport on Wednesday to welcome AICC general secretary K C Venugopal, but the reception quickly turned into a display of support for Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar.

Venugopal arrived in the city to participate in the centenary commemoration of the historic dialogue between Mahatma Gandhi and Narayana Guru. The event, organised by the Sivagiri Mutt, Varkala, in association with the Mangalore University Sri Narayana Guru Study Chair, is being held on the university’s Konaje campus.

KPCC general secretary Mithun Rai and several party workers had assembled at the airport to receive Venugopal. However, the moment he stepped out, workers began raising slogans backing Shivakumar.

The university programme will be inaugurated by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.

This show of support comes just a day after Siddaramaiah remarked that Shivakumar would lead the government “when the high command decides.” The chief minister made the comment after a breakfast meeting at Shivakumar’s residence—another public display of camaraderie between the two leaders amid ongoing attempts by the party high command to downplay their leadership rivalry.

Mangaluru, Nov 30: A 22-year-old college student succumbed to her injuries at a private hospital in Mangaluru today, days after she was hit by a goods tempo while crossing a road in Padubidri.

The deceased has been identified as Preksha, a resident of Nadsalu Billitota in Padubidri. The fatal incident occurred as Preksha, who was returning home after completing her examination, attempted to cross the service road towards Mangaluru. She was struck by a goods tempo approaching from the Udupi side, causing her to fall and sustain a severe head injury.

Prompt action from local residents ensured she received immediate first aid before being rushed to a hospital in Mangaluru for specialised treatment. Despite medical efforts, she passed away while undergoing care.

Preksha was a student at Karavali College, Vamanjoor on the outskirts of Mangaluru city. The tragedy is compounded by the fact that she belonged to a financially vulnerable family, having previously lost her father. She is survived by her mother and brother.

A case related to the accident has been registered at the Padubidri police station, and an investigation is underway to determine the exact circumstances that led to the collision. The incident highlights the growing concerns over road safety, particularly on busy service roads, and serves as a tragic reminder of the human cost of traffic accidents.
