Manipal, May 21: Excitement has filled the atmosphere since the selection of Manipal students’ project team to compete at Mars Desert Research Station (MDRS), Utah, USA. Manipal Mars Rover (MRM) team comprises of 18 students both second and third year from different engineering streams of Manipal Institute of Technology, Manipal University.
The team had made its debut last year and had secured 13th position. Of 83 teams that applied across the globe, only 30 teams have made to the next round including MRM. Following a competitive two-stage down-select process, teams are now invited to the field competition at MDRS.
MRM received an email confirmation of their participation on 21st March 2017, after sending their technical report followed a video for selection. The students are working on four aspects - mechanical, electronics, science cache and management- for building an efficient Mars rover.
The competition is in the first week of June and the team has a lot of expectations. Learning from past experiences the team tried to cover all the technical flaws of last time and tried to make a more efficient and cost effective rover.
The main challenge at the URC is to build a next generation Mars rover that will in future work hand in hand with development and efficiency.
The team was formed in September 2014 and the students have been working on this since then to leave a mark on advancement of technology.
