Mangaluru, Dec 17: A two-day national seminar on'Nationalism as a Religion: Trends in India' will be jointly organised by Department of English, Political Science, History and Sociology at Pompei College, Aikala on December 19 and 20 at the college premises, said principal of the college Dr John C Miranda.
Briefing mediapersons at a press conference here on Wednesday, he said that the two-day national seminar would be inaugurated on Friday with a keynote address by human-rights activist and professor at IIT Kharagpur Prof Anand Teltumbde. The inaugural ceremony will be presided over by secretary of Catholic Board of Education Fr Jerald D'Souza, he said.
He also said that eminent scholars in the area of nationalism would take part in the seminar as resource persons and panelists. Film and media critic Dr M Madhava Prasad will speak on'Language as Commons and the Nation-state Form'. Independent scholar from Pondicherry Prof G Aloysius will present his thoughts on'Nationalism as Religion and Religion as Nationalism: Some Contextual Considerations'. Dr K Sathyanarayana will speak on'The Nationalist Representation of the Untouchable: Literature, Caste and the Dalit Critic', he said.
The national seminar will be organised in association with Private and Aided Colleges' Non-teaching Staff Association. It will have seven plenary sessions on various topics and one parallel paper presentation session. Around 200 delegates comprising academics, activists, research scholars and students are expected to participate in the seminar, he said.
